My friend is looking at a 97 carver 405. It has a soft spot about a foot in diameter in the swim platform. This platform is part of the boat. Not an extension to the boat. The owner is dead. Don't know how it happened. Costly repair? The rest of the boat looks good.

If the fiberglass will push down easy and stop hard it's most likely disbonded, if it pushes down with resistance that means the core is soft and needs replaced in that area. Are there any fasteners in the area or other penetrations in the area that would allow water to get to the core.

I have a friend with a carver with a similar problem on his deck is there a fix for disbonding?

Does it show any signs of impact? Cracking or lines of fracture in a pattern? Any type of supporting structure to the platform? Foam filled or webbing as in 'I' beam.

If there is a "soft spot" there, how many other "soft spots" may there be??? Needs serious investigation..

It would be money well spent to have a surveyor look at it before making the purchase

simple fix with epoxy or epoxy putty and clamps....mayby a few stainless carriage bolts...

Talking to Al Prisco (from this site and a surveyor) would be a good first step. What your friend sees may only be the tip of the iceberg, or not. A good surveyor knows problems with particular brands and models. If this was a platform that was attached to the boat, and not part of the boat, I would not be so concerned. But since this is not the case, your friend should be concerned and wants to make sure this is just on the swim platform. Like Carver stated, if all looks good otherwise, you should always have a survey.

MarkMuck, that alone is not a big deal and can be repaired fairly easily.
