Vic, I was really getting frustrated trying to get head to prime after winter storage. Tried several things and nothing was working, and then I read your post about springtime recommisioning. Took off hose, poked pencil in inlet, felt ball move, and wa-lah, water in the bowl! I was guilty of not following the old adage "when all else fails, read the directions". Thanks for your knowledge. Now a question. I still have water standing in bowl after flushing. I have replaced joker valve, and completly disconnected the holding tank vent line. what next? I have a Raritan Crown head. electric, my Carver manual says S/N 885

Clean water or dirty water, Don?

Your Crown Head, if original to the boat, was manufactured in August, 1985 (serial # is month and year of manufacture). I'd double-check the actual serial number on the motor, though. It may have been replaced at some point through the years by a previous owner. If it is indeed a serial # 885, it's pretty tired at this point and may need to be rebuilt (or exchanged).

When I flush, all water goes out of bowl, but then backs up into bowl, leaving about 2" of fairly clean water. For rebuild, is there a kit for this unit. Used in fresh water only. In my owners manual, there is a letter from Raritan stating this unit was part of a new production run. Says motor is now self contained, wound fields replaced by permanent magnets. Would this unit require a unique kit?

Before I can answer that, I'll need the data off of the label on top of the motor (model, volts, amps, serial number, etc.)

I have two of these heads on my Carver and I think it's normal for there to be a few inches of water left standing in the bowl after flushing. Seems the standing water could be a trap against smelly gas coming back into the bowl from the holding tank.

That's true, but if it never used to have water coming back into the bowl but it now does, then something is wrong.
