Hi all

Thinking about going there and have a couple of questions
1) Is is well marked from FI inlet (if not whats the best route)
2) Any problems with a 3' draft
3) Can you stay on the hook overnight, and is the cove somewhat protected or will you rock all night
4) Can you take the dink to land (any parks for the kids near?)

When you come in FI inlet, once you're heading east you'll see a small rocky area to the north. That's the 'sore thumb' and just beyond that is the cove. There are no special markers going into the cove, but it's not hard to get into. The deepest water is actually close to shore by the rocks, so just head straight in at a safe distance from the rocks.

No problems with a 3' draft, in fact I've been noticing this summer that large sailboats have been using it as an overnight stopoff on long trips. You can stay overnight, it's fairly well protected, particularly from any winds coming from the west. If the wind is southeast it might not be too comfortable. There is some current in that spot which will probably swing the boat around when the tide turns so something to keep in mind when anchoring.

I believe it's okay to dink to the beach which is right there. I know there was some dispute about that last year but I think the latest is it's okay to go to shore.

Also, the water is refreshed by the tides so it is not a bad place to take a dip. Just watch out for currents. On a raft-up we throw a bunch of rings tied to the boats and let the kids swim. Ok, yes and the adults :--)

P.S. The rocks jet out and look like a thumb…… hence the name Sore Thumb. I think that’s the story. Anyone else know how it got the name ?
 
Brad, yep, that's pretty much where the name comes from. Actually there used to be more rocks and it stuck out more, if you look at an old chart it looked more like a thumb. A lot of sand filled in behind it to the west which changed the look. The sore thumb was created in the early 1960s to protect the houses by Oak Beach I believe.
 
I guess now it is an older stubbier thumb ;-)

Last year late summer we had a raft-up with about 7 or 8 boats. We were to stay the whole day; some of the boats even had day tripper guests. The day was spectacular, then the day turned into early evening and all of sudden we all started realizing we had to go. But no one was going, and then some of us began to lobby about staying. Well the day trippers never spent a night on a boat let alone on the hook. But somehow we all managed to talk each other into staying. The night was calm, no bugs, stars, plenty of leftover food and drink with good music.

It had to be the best impromptu overnight raft-up I ever had. I even forgot that I had lost my job after 19 years and was unemployed. That’s what a good day of boating can do for you. :)
 
Years ago I was told by some workers at Sore Thumb that it was made up of pieces of the old Sunrise Highway. Don't know how true that is though.
 
I remember being able to drive out on it all the way to the end back in the 80's. Great surf fishing spot. I believe it was a nasty noreaster or possibly Hurricane Gloria that washed out the entire middle section.
 
You'll like it....We go there probably ten times a summer. Just if you anchor close to the shore keep an eye on the tide otherwise you'll be able to clean the bottom of the boat
