Was told to try Champion Rv15yc4 plugs instead of the standard mr43t in my 37 seayay with merc 454. Was told better performance. I know if the plug gets too hot piston damage can occur. Anybody have experience with this plug? Am I taking a chance?
The mr43t is a marine plug. It is made out of a different alloy for corrosion resistance. Assuming the rv15yc4 plugs will actually give you better performance, at most it would be a few HP. I doubt you would notice the difference. The question is whether the corrosion resistance is more important than "better" performance.
I used the RV15YC4 plugs on my 82 260 OMC at the suggestion of George Van Parys, he said it was an updated plug that was better suited for the fuels in use now. All I can say is that they worked just fine. I currently use the AC MR43T plugs on my 89 5.7's and they seem to work fine too.
Champs are not the plug they used to be. I went to NGK Iridium for my 454 (7.4 MPI) and I stopped buying plugs. The things last forever and run great. You usually have to order them from Sparkplugs.com or other sites as most auto supplies do not stock the correct ones.
