Thanks, I did full bottom paint last year and used 2, just want to make sure i didn't over painted. I think I will skip this year and just touch up as you do. It still looks pretty good.
 
It depends on the paint but I have done it in 1 1/2 and thicker paint take 2. I have painted the bottom every year last year was the first year I paid the yard to do it after I prepped it. For the record I was very happy with the job the yard did and I made sure they new it!
 
Painting it every year is a waste of money, and it builds the paint up so thick that you will eventually spend a bundle getting it off.

Would you recommend to paint every year? I did painted the smaller boats every year but this one is a lot of work, i am also very surprised with the good condition of the paint.
I am going to paint the swim platform though. I started with these two small platforms that are over the hydraulics of the swim platform.

i think i will skip this year, only some touch ups. .

Every year I say this year I will just touch up and then I do the whole thing. There is nothing wrong with just touching up I just always have so many spots I need to do so I just repaint the entire boat. If it looks good leave it alone!

It has been two years since I painted the bottom and I did not touch up last year. I am getting it done this year in the spring as it was looking a bit haggard last fall when I hauled to wash the bottom and replace the zincs. In two years I am going to soda blast the bottom and start anew.

Are you guys using a hard paint or ablative?
 
I stripped the bottom a few years ago and then did a new barrier coat and 4 coats of ablative so it's real easy to prep and touch up or even repaint a thin coat from year to year without building a think mess.

I am using an ablative too. Like I said, I will probably get it done in Aprilish. Allthough I would really rather put it off until fall.

I didn't strip it but yes I did I use Petite barrier three coats as recommended then one coat of Blue and three coats of black ablative paint. It was a big job. My father in-law was a huge help. By the time I was have way through I was done to 1 1/2 hours per coat. I don't ever want to do this again. The job requires timing between coats in order for the paint to bond both to the boat and to each other layer. I would be happy to pay someone next time I say this but I'm sure I would do it again if it meant having to come up with the money:)
 
I'm going to get a price for soda blasting from Ginny. It's really not something I want to do myself. i do my own bottom painting but this is anothet story. Plus, I bought my boat new but there was never a barrier coat put on so I would like to get everything off and do it right.

I'm gonna have to see what the price of this will be though. By your description it sounds like a huge amount of work. Not so much interested in putting a lot of money up for boat work right now.
 
Yeah that's what I kind of figured. If that's the case I'll probably just put another coat of bottom paint on and save the stripping for another time.
