speedometer problem(connection)

my speed gauge does not work. I traced the hose from the back of the gauge and thru the transom and the hose stops right outside the transom and is strapped to the backside of my outdrive.
Yamaha 5.7 V8. Doese anyone know what it needs to connect to? I believe its the pitot type but i dont see no kick plate.
