I just got a new to me 36 foot Boatel Yacht. I see some spider cracks in the bottom of the hull. No water is leaking inside. Whats the best way to repair them before water does start getting in the hull.

Blast it, barrier coat it, and paint it. Or spray it with bedliner.

Spray with bed liner? On the bottom?

Wayne, I can’t answer your question, however, recently I was wondering what became of your Canadian buddy that was building a trawler in his shed. Any updates on that?

Yes. Bedliner on the bottom. It is pricey and heavier than conventional bottom paint, but it will be there forever.

As to the origiano question, i had never heads of Boatel. A quick search shows they re older houseboats so i guess that limits the options. Spider cracks could be a result of stress or just a gelcoat problem. Impossible to give an answer without knowing more, like how much surface is cracking and how is the hull built. Cored.
Also need to know how deep they are. Any cracks inside.

If only suoerficial, the right way is to sand or sabdblast then roll epoxy, 2 or 3 coats... then paint. Dont know if the boat is worth spending that kind of money.

So, Fiberglass guy says the spider cracks are minor. $1200.00 to soda blast the bottom, 500 for material for 2 coats of barrier coating and 2 coats of anti-fouling paint. I have to put the barrier coat and anti-fouling paint. So for$1700.00 its a done deal. Will do in the spring.

Is the boat going to be in clear fresh water? If so, you could also blast it and coat it in coal tar epoxy.

two coats of barrier won't do it. You need 4 to 5 coats to do it right. I'd put 2 base coats of hard epoxy bottom paint over that. Once you have the bottom stripped, you'll be way ahead if you do it right.

You might even blast it before Spring since it could pop some blisters or open up things a bit and improve drying. I agree on the 4 to 5 coats of barrier. Read the directions on the barrier coat.

Very very good info. 4 to 5 coats it will be then. I am looking at having it blasted in the next 2 weeks. The blaster guy is talking about using crushed glass???
Thoughts on that??

Beats whole bottles? I dunno. As long as it scrubs the bottom clean and does not leave a residue that is incompatible with the barrier. But they should wipe it clean with an appropriate solvent anyway.
