St Lawrence River Joins the Great Lakes

Wayne
I would be more than happy to assist with info. I feel we have one of the greatest boating areas in the northeast. So many boating options with the river, the canals and Lake Ontario all at our doorstep.

The get together sounds fine.

Shel;
Not a twilite zone for me...I was answering a question that Riverfever30 had asked...Not sure on the "Not Moderated" postings, so I sent Les an E-Mail asking for direction on this...I think I have it figured out and fixed now...

Thanks Wayne, I can see everything now. I was blind, but now I see.

Hopefully this will grow to include lots of info on all the Great Lakes. We're on Lake Huron (Bayfield) and have travelled south to Lake St Clair, and a little north to Kincardine.

Next week, we're trailering the boat to Lake Simcoe where we will begin a trip down the Trent-Severn canal, out onto Georgian Bay and north to Pointe au Baril (then back). We plan on spending 10-12 days on the trip in total. I'll be taking lots of pictures and will try and post some of them here when we're back.

I know it's short notice but does anyone have any tips on particular marinas along the way (i.e. must visit / must avoid, etc.)?

I have done the Trent 3 times, but am more familar with the waters from Trenton to Lake Simcoe...
If you have a chance along the way, pick up a Ports book for the Trent And Georgeon Bay...You can't go wrong with them...
Use extreme caution when entering Georgeon bay...Follow your charts and don't wander from the channels...

Thanks Carver. I picked up both Ports guides a while back...very informative!

I've been cautioned by others about Georgian Bay, and Lakes Simcoe and Couchiching also. I hear the channels are well marked but it still makes me a little nervous. I'm putting a lot a faith in my chartplotter (and paper charts for back-up).

Wish me luck.

Enjoy your trip and take lots of pics...
Very scenic area your going to be in...
I never enjoyed too much of our first trip to the area, as I was afraid to take my eyes off the chart plotter...I looked up every once in a while when I got a glimpse of a Bikini going by...

AHhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh........The Trent and Georgian Bay..Wish I could go.
We were actually planning our summer trip there this year but I just discovered last December that I'm Banned from Canada.

I think from your starting point you will miss this one...

No, haven't done it before but Big Chute is one of the locks we're looking forward to. We'll be there mid-week so hopefully there are no lengthy delays like I've heard can happen on weekends.

We will likely miss Kirkfield, unless we have time to head east from Lake Simcoe. Wouldn't mind going as far as Bobcaygeon.

Nice picture by the way.

Caygeon is a very nice little touristy town...If you are in the need for a pair of shoes while there I suggest Bigleys Shoes...If there is a pair of shoes made, they will have them, and at a very reasonable price...
The only drawback to going to Caygeon is that when you leave Simcoe and head towards Sturgeon Lake there is quite a stretch of Canal you will be in, and it is just like boating in a ditch...In fact it is a ditch...
There is a very nice sand bar on your left as you enter Sturgeon Lake...

Shel, we are heading out next week for 15 days crusing your favorite lake:) Next year we will come through the Welland and do something that way.
