I was hoping to get a response from another thread but since I haven't I figured I would start a new one.

During the past storm my bow rail suffered some damage and is in need of repair. I have never needed any work like this before and have no idea who to call. BoatUS told me to get estimates and I'm not sure where to start. The rails are welded so I can't just remove a small section and replace it. Any advise welcome.

As I said it is welded to the stanchions.
It is about a three to four foot area that has deep scratches and a small bend it is already rusting. Looks like it been there for years and its only been three days. Very sharp edges that can cut someone if not careful. It will have to be cut and welded on site. It might be possible to cut the section out and make a new section and reinstalled using internal couplers. I will not be OK with tee fitting that are used on some boats being there are no other fittings like that on the boat.

Had a similar situation, it is possible to cut and weld in a new section, on my boat you can't even tell where the work was performed, like new condition, cost was around $1200 to repair if memory serves, it was done at a local boat yard on their dock.

EngineWorks That what I figured the problem is finding someone local to do the work. As for the damage I took a few pictures today.

This is the port bow line the broke

It's a little hard to capture the damage in a picture but this satellite is what did the job.

I'm sure it will be fixed and be good as new it's just upsetting when something like this happens.

Too bad you live so far away. My TIG is fairly portable.(36 lbs) The argon bottle is the heavy part.

Sounds like a good Road trip when you going to be here? I'll buy the beer and the stainless parts :)

I spoke to the yard that I keep the boat at for the winter and they said they know someone that can take care of it but I need to get estimates for the insurance claim fairly soon. If it has to wait until I haul out it's not the end of the world I plan on coming out in two weeks anyway. It's just upsetting to find damage of any kind on your boat and I would like to take care of it ASAP.

Dave you should have got that KVH M-1 or 3 if that was your dish then your rail would still be ok. Actually I'm just kidding around. I have had better weekends than this past one.

Sounds like you have it under control. Another option is to remove the stanchions/rail combo and take the whole assembly to a welder. I think you should wait til the winter storage yard can have it done. I'm sure they have dealt with this sort of thing several times.

Bill this was planned for a winter project I already installed the mount I just need to find a good deal on a dish.

Flutterby I would have to remove about a 20' section to bring it somewhere I would need a very big truck to do this. The issue I have is not waiting for a repair but getting estimates for the claim. The railing it just ugly but it's not effecting the operation in any way.

Maybe the marina folks could have the repair guy come to your boat to give you an estimate? Is it a long distance to travel? Or perhaps a local surveyor could give you a fair estimate....

I wish they would and I'm sure they are reading this as well but I was told to wait for reasons I understand but have nothing to do with me. I would like to try to expedite this so if anyone knows of someone local to give me an estimate that would be great I would have no problem using them it would not be a waste of time on their part.

Spoiled Brat on G dock used someone on his rails that were broken and was very happy with the work. I would take a walk over he is on the outside of G dock and has a formula. I sure he would give you the number. And I know he had welding done.

Were his rails damaged by the travel lift? If so that would be the person I was told to wait until I haul to look at the boat. I suspect it is. I'll check with him next weekend. Was there any damage on G dock? I heard a few dock boxes blow in but I don't know of anything else. I hope you all weathered the storm well.

Hi Dave! In Stony Point there is a Welding company does that kind of work. I don't have any idea of phone # or name but I'm sure if you ask Ed at "your" marina he knows the guys. There is another guy in Norwalk does very great work but probably cost you 4 or 5 times more.

Thanks Tony I think this is the guy Mike mentioned earlier today and I suspect he did the repairs on Spoiled Brat I don't have his contact info but I will hunt him down. I will wait to do the repair when I get it over to the yard but I want the paperwork taken care of before then. I don't want to have to chase the money later. I will but out in a couple of weeks. I'll see you then.

Its a bit of a ride, but Lockwood Marine in NJ does that kind of work - re-fabricated a bow pulpit for me once + they did a great job.

Yes the damage was done by travel lift. We lost a couple of dock box's but nothing major. We were lucky a couple of local boaters ran down and put extra lines on everyone. Thanks again guy's

Three weeks and I still haven't gotten an estimate to do the repairs I have had people look at it but they don't think they can do the job. I have someone else coming before to end of the week but I'm not sure he can handle this either. Does anyone know the name of the place in Norwalk that Boatcomfort was talking about?
This is getting very frustrating.
