Can you screw brackets into starboard? I would like to use a piece of starboard instead of plywood for a project but am not sure that I will be able to attach the brackets with screws. Can't use bolts. Any helpful tips will be appreciated.

Screw hold VERY WELL in starboard... The threads grab well and they won't rip out. In fact SS screws will break if forced in without ore drilling

http://www.kingplastic.com/products/all-products/king-starboard-family/king-starboard/ Look at the lower left of the page and click th tab labeled "downloads".

There is a great wealth of information about StarBoard, their product. Included info on cutting, shaping, nailing, screwing, bolting, gluing and welding starboard, when to do it, and when not to, as well as describing the unique properties of starboard which you need to consider when designing a project sing their product.

It is a great product when used correctly, but if you fail to adapt to starboard's special properties, you can end up with an expensive failed experiment.

This particular one page PDF covers many of the important issues.

Starboard can be painted with H&C Concrete (Xylene Base) Stain. I've done anchor locker hatches and several other projects and two coats of stain have held up well for over 12 months. H&C is now owned by Sherwin Willians and can also be purchased at Lowes Home Centers.

You can use HDPE at a lower cost. You can get it at Tap Plastics.

Thanks much for the prompt, helpful responses regarding attaching brackets to starboard. Now to find time to complete my work.
