I would try jumping the solenoid with a large screw driver first if you can access it.
Second is replacing the solenoid, lot's cheaper.
Be careful on replacing the starter. It could be reverse rotation.
Good Luck

Jumping across solenoid is effective but very dangerous in an explosive atmosphere.

Had to hire a highly-trained professional to solve the problem.

Turned out to be a loose/bad ground connection. Once a good ground was achieved, it started right up.

Thanks again for all the suggestions and tips. [:-thumbu]

Good enough!

We often focus on the Hot Side and it takes Ground to make it work too.

Bruce- Glad you're back in biz, and that it was a relatively easy fix,... albeit "once-removed". I'm a little surprised the starter would even whine.

Instead of or in addition to those other placards, the Coasties should require all boats with any kind of electricity onboard to prominently display one that says,
"CHECK THE GROUNDS 1ST!". :D

So true. The easiest thing to check/correct wasn't even a blip on the to-do list radar.

All the connections are being redone on both engines... from battery to starter.

You're right, j-d, I tested the "hot" side all the way, never thought to check the ground.
