starter problem

1978 mercruiser 260 hp 350 the best i can tell starter # is 9000895 sae J1171 this is a piece of crap every few years i have to replace it because of a plastic inside that breaks. surely there is something better please advise. thank you
 
order a permanent magnet starter. They're half as heavy so easier to install. You just have to match your present mounting pattern...inline or off-set bolt pattern. They should cost about $50.
 
Thanks charlie can i get it from most marine stores the one i have is bolts in line but i think the off-set pattern would fit does it matter.
 
staggered is 14 inch and straight across is 12 3/4 cant have it both ways. sounds more like a hydro-lock condition
or ignition timing issue is taking out the starters
 
Charlie i don't understand the 123/4 or 14 inch if your talking about bolt pattern mine is 3 1/4 in line
 
talking about flywheel, diameter, in relation to the starter bolts, straight or staggered
 
Yeah, the bolt pattern mounts the starter at a different distance from the crank shaft, depending on the diameter of the flywheel.

The starter motor is the same. The only difference is the front mounting casting that positions the starter for the particular flywheel.

Are you finding the starter mounting bolts "loose?" Partial hydrolock (still cranks but there's resistance from water in the cylinder) can stretch the bolts, making them loose.
 
That's a great link, thanks. I hope I remember about it if/when I need to replace my starter.
 
If you don't, Stephen, just ask. I have simply NEVER heard anything but good about DBE.
