Hey Guys,

1999, 454 7.4 Bravo III Fuel Injected. Starting issue. It is very hit or miss as it doesn't do it all the time. I have checked all battery connections, grounds to block, ignition switch, and throttle position (also wiggled it when the problem occurred).

My question is, the next cheapest solution appears to be the Starter solenoid but I'm not sure of its location. It looks like a $20-$30 part from what I've seen on the net. Can anyone with this year engine point me in the right direction on its location? Maybe a picture? Or if there are any other suggestions on what you think the source of the problem might be….Thanks!!
 
Cranking issue, correct? Once the Starter rolls it over, it starts, True? If so...
There should be (literally!) a Black Box on one of your Risers, probably the Port Side one. Has the red circuit breaker reset button on it. Slave Solenoid is inside that box, below the circuit breaker. They're about $20 on line and two common types. One has a bulge on the bottom and the other is flat. They do the same thing but mounting the wrong one will be difficult.
The Slave Solenoid is a common no-crank problem. Sometimes when the Battery is topped all the way up with a charger, it'll make contact and you'll crank. Deceptive because you can hear it Click but it isn't making contact.
Circuit: Neutral Safety Switch allows Key Switch to have power to the Start Terminal. Key Switch powers Slave, Slave powers Starter Solenoid (the one mounted on the actual Starter).
Disconnect the Battery before you start on this!
 
Try /jumping/bypassing the 2 large secondary circuit terminals that remote solenoid to see if that is the culprit . Blower 1st of course to remove any possible fumes as there will be a few sparks if you don't have a switch built into your HD jumper.
 
When you say you checked all the connections, did you actually disconnect and wire brush them or just look at them. How about the connections at the solenoid on the starter and the starters connection.

what's happening when you turn the key, is there any sound coming from the solenoid or starter?
 
And don't neglect checking the engine ground connections too.
 
Thanks for all the replys, I will let you know progress tomorrow, as I'm going to try trouble shooting tonight after work.
 
You still haven't verified type of starting issue. Is it not turning over...or turning over and not firing? There are two different types of problems.

Also, verify type on inspection of connection. Simple visual inspection is useless.
 
The actual issue was when I turned the key “nothing would happen”. I would do this 2-3 times then all the sudden it would fire. Sometimes this issue would occur and sometimes not.

I trailered the boat over to my local marine mechanic and had him look at it yesterday. He check all connections/grounds and He replaced the slave solenoid as well as the 50 amp circuit breaker on the block. I ran on the muffs last night and started a dozen times with no issue. Hopefully that was the cause.

With no noise from any solenoid, sounds like a bad starter/Ignition switch or maybe neutral safety switch. Not a problem of bad connections unless it's on the switch.
