Westchester County health officials on Monday warned people to avoid contact with the Hudson River after the deluge from Tropical Storm Irene caused a sewage spill in the river.

The warning comes after two other spills resulted in advisories this summer.
The county Health Department said that rains from Irene had overwhelmed the North Yonkers Pump Station and dislodged a manhole cover, allowing sewage to spill into the river. Officials said they cannot yet say how much sewage is spewing into the river.

“Due to the nature of the spill, we are unable to quantify the amount of sewage that has been discharged," Health Department spokeswoman Heather McGill said. “The spill is ongoing."

John Lipscomb, a boat captain with the environmental group Riverkeeper, applauded the county for notifying the public, but said the county needs to do a better job of telling the public about regular sewage spills.

Thanks for the heads-up. I missed this article when I read the news this morning.

Probably don't want to be in the river for a few days anyway. There should be some nasty flotsam in the river for the forseeable future.

Drove over the BMB. The river looked like chocolate milk, not very appealing at all. There were fields of debris visible from the bridge.

Westchester's health department issued an advisory Monday warning residents to avoid contact with the river because of the contamination. The Rockland County Health Department issued a similar warning because of the Yonkers spill.

Westchester officials lifted the advisory Tuesday afternoon, saying in a statement that enough time had lapsed to allow the discharge to dissipate. It was expected that Rockland officials would lift their advisory as well.

McGill said Westchester officials would check with Rockland County officials before lifting the advisory Tuesday to ensure there were no issues from Rockland that could affect Westchester.

I wonder if the debris will be clear by the weekend. I hope so. I'd hate to miss Labor Day weekend on the water.

I drove over the TZ twice today what a mess in the River this weekend is not looking good.

Victoria Secret went out today for a ride, how about a report on the conditions?

My wife and I stayed at PBM from Monday until today...I think if you timed your steps right you could walk right across the river on the debris. The water is highly turbid, looks like chocolate milk!

On the Rondout, the current has subsided greatly. There remains a flow of flotsam, though that has decreased somewhat. Saw a kayaker making his way upstream against the current -- a scrawny guy -- so it can't be running that fast. High tide is still over spilling but at low, you'd never know there was a tropical storm passing by 72 hours ago.

I ran from Kingston to liberty landing yesterday and while there are many debris fields I was able to run 27-28 knots most of the way. I looked like a drunken sailor dodging stuff but it is passable.

Rommer I am glad you made it safe. I am not sure I would have run that fast as we saw a lot stuff just below the surface of the water with several logs sticking straight up. We saw everything from massive trees, to buckets/garbage cans, even a floating window from a house hardware/glass included floating near Hook Mtn. I was waiting for the house to drift by. Some areas were a real mess and then you could travel about 1 mile in fairly clean water. I may try Bowline this weekend but I do not want to travel that far on the river, I like my props the way they are.

Bill- I'm with you. I rebuilt my props last winter ... all four of them. Bowline for me.

The stuff on the surface is not too hard to avoid, it's what's right under the surface that scares me. If I go out, it will be at idle speed.

More on stay out of the water.

New Paltz is dumping raw sewage into the Walkill. The Walkill dumps into the Rondout.

quote:

“It will be the end of the weekend and next Tuesday ... before our (sewage) plant is fully operational,” village Mayor Jason West said. “Until then ... there is no treatment of our waste. It’s going right into the river along with (that of) many other communities, I’d imagine.”

Yup and it's gonna flow right past the Port Ewen drinking water supply inlet on the Hudson when the Rondout dumps into the Hudson.

Well isn't all of this pleasant! My boat is floating ( thank God, after the hurricane) in a filthy public toilet with a broken handle. I like earthquakes better than hurricanes.

Randango - PBM

I can't believe what is floating in the marina. We drove by Bowline to see how it looks and to our surprise although it's a little muddy it looked clean, didn't see anything floating around in there. I guess Bowline is the spot for the weekend. Ben if you beat me there set a couple of anchors and we will go from there.
