We will be making our run to the summer slip next week and will need an opening of the Stone Harbor Blvd. bridge for passage. A first for me... hailing a bridge tender to open up.

What VHF channel should one utilize to hail a bridge tender in NJ along the ICW?... channel 16?

Thanks, Doug

I believe the bridge tenders monitor channel 13. Also, one long and one short blast of your horn should signal the tender that you'd like the bridge open.

Most bridge operators monitor channel 13 for opening requests. I have seen others that will post what VHF channel you should use. Another reason to always carry a good set of binoculars so you can scan for those tiny little signs!

Hail the bridge on 13 just as you would hail another boat, request an opening, the bridge tender will tell you when he will open.

Hail them on channel 13 or 16, if I remeber correctly the 96th street bridge (stone harbor) answer on both.

It is real easy and goes like this:

96th street bridge 96th street bridge, this is (vesel name) requesting a bridge opening.

It may take a couple of minutes for him to open the bridge. The bridge tender is usally in the shack on the island side of the bridge and he has to wlak up to the bridge controls in the center of the bridge. You can see him walking up after you call him.

Are you in the Stone Harbor Marina, or a private slip? Do you know if The Stone Harbor Marina has the pump out station working yet. They did not have it running all last year, over an hour round trip to the next closet that we found.

Thanks to you all for the help. Doesn't look like we will be making the run this week. Marina/Service folks did not finish warranty work and spring commish yet... and it looks like rain for a week or so.

nph, no I am not at SHM and, sorry, I can't answer your question on the pump out. We keep the boat a bit further north in OC.

Thanks again everyone.

We finally made our summer home run last Wednesday. I hope some of you were able to get out that day too. It was a magnificent day to be on the water and a great start to the season for us!

Funny thing.... as we were running the no wake zone just north of the SH bridge, a boater passing by heading south asked me the same question I posed to you regarding the channel for the bridge tender.

Doug
