Stony Point Bay Marina

I can't let Patsy's get the bad rap! It's unwarranted. Obviously, EVERY marina has its pros and cons. From the perspective of a once loyal customer of SPBM, who was innocently caught between Bill Price and an independant mechanic's pi$$ing contest, SPBM did me dirty. They invited me to leave.

Patsy's welcomed me and my 37' boat with open arms, and has been a refuge and a home away from home ever since. Jimmy Tammen and Mike Inserra are straight-up guys...their families are very cordial, and we've made some really good friends there. It's a good mix of mature folks, families with kids, teenagers...a good, fun group. The atmosphere is anything but cold.

I've never experienced "Wayne's World", so I make no claim about whether SPBM under new ownership is good or bad. Some of my old SPBM friends suggest we should come back, thanks, but we're perfectly happy at Patsy's...our grandkids 4 and 7 LOVE IT and have a cadre of wonderful friends with whom they swim, play, enjoy Patti's smores and Ice Cream Sunday's (sundaes on Sunday)...now with the addition of the Seaweed folks, there's a whole bunch of prospective new friends.
Life at Patsy's is GOOD!!!

Some friends of ours just came up and stayed a couple of days at Haverstraw Marina. They were in silver 60. I never realized what a hike it can be to get to your slip - God help you if you forget something in the car. They also were told that the docks get too hot for the dogs on sunny days.

The pool is nice, we hung out at the bar for a while and enjoyed it.

Our winter slip used to be Sliver 1 Hogan. It is quite a hike. Good point about the dogs feet equally as important is just how slick the metal docks are when wet. You do get a fuel discount though and that can add up fast.

So you did the metal framed Tiki bar eh? ;)

Does SPBM let you work on your own boat in their yard? I remember someone on the board saying one of the marinas would not let you do work on your boat unless they were doing it.

You can do your own work at SPBM but outside contractors will have to pay a percentage. Change your own zincs, paint your boats bottom, etc, no problem.

marsij, i understand your thoughts completely. different strokes. no matter how you slice it, this forum is the best of the best from the area on many levels.

Your so right Mike, those docks are way too hot for dogs, yet time & again I see people with their dogs casually walking while their animals are obviously in pain. A few weeks ago I was coming down the ramp just past the office onto the beginning of main dock. There was a guy there talking to someone, about half way between the ramp & red dock with two small dogs on a leash. The dogs were "dancing" trying to pick their feet up off the hot dock and whimpering. I could not just walk by, and hoped he was a transient who did not know any better...stupid as that may seem. I very nicely told him that the aluminum docks get extemely hot & his dogs appeared in pain. He glared at me like he wanted to kill me then turned around & continued talking!!! It was very difficult to control myself from pushing this idiot into the water and this kind of thing...albeit not as extreme, happens all the time. People should take their shoes off and see just how hot those docks really get!

So Mike, when ya moving over?

Dont get me wrong about Haverstraw either. It used to be a great place and we have made allot of good friends there. Times have changed though. When I was single and pre-kids it was really good with all the social life and etc. Now with kids it has changed for us. I don't know why but it has. Probably since allot of friends left the marina and can not just go hang out on other boats now with the kids and the adult partying. Most of the crew we used to hang out with has older kids or none at all. True Haverstraw has a pool for additional $$$$ but in 19 years at Haverstraw I have NEVER been in that pool. The playground is on the other side of the marina and for that distance I am better going over to the huge playground down the road at the park. The restaurant - take it or leave it. I am not paying those prices for a burger.

I think it is just time for a change. Maybe a new marina will change things and the thoughts of possibly a bigger boat would help and if we stay in boating that will have to happen very soon with 2 kids. Yes - I am enticing that idea. Possibly a bridge type boat.

P.S. Marylou was great.

This past spring when PennyBridge launched my boat I had to stay there for a while while they finished working on it. I used to pull up in the parking lot and my boat was RIGHT THERE! Even the furthest slip away...was close! We used to sit in the car and look at our boat in disbelief that we could SEE the boat from the car. We just thought that was the coolest thing. And the wood docks are SO quiet one night we were walking around with Caryl & you could not even hear our footsteps! Everyone has their own gas grill, they are allowed to buy their own dock boxes, and put stuff on their docks, it's just so much more "family". I think you hit the nail on the head Rob, most of my close friends are gone too and every year since 2003 & have enjoyed boating less & less. Haverstraw used to be SO much fun but now I find myself sometimes not even wanting to go to the boat because it's such a hassle...so I go hiking instead. Figure if I want to walk long distances it's going to be because I'm hiking in the woods...not at the Haverstraw Marina LOL!!

I'm Lee's friend Todd I'm on G dock and have been there for about 7 years I like the marina and the people (?) only kidding. Made alot of good friends and the night life is never boring lee use to be part of the night life so looking foward to him coming home to where he belongs. Alot of people left but some came back. it's not alway's the marina but the people you become friends with so you deal with the water problem which really is not that bad.

LEE DID YOU GET A SLIP!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'd happily deal with low water for a marina with a pool, friendly people, activities for my kids and a social life for my wife.

How low is low. According to Volvo I cant "leave" the drives trimmed up at all due to their poor design of their Ocean Series. They would have to stay in the down position. Is there enough water at low tide for that without them sitting in mud?

Tye your boat up good and tight and blow out all the mud from your slip, otherwise your drive will most likely sit in some mud.

I don't think it's just the ocean series keeping your drives trimmed up is bad for, I think it's bad for all outdrives/bellows.

Boating Rob

I have outdrives and never had a problem with the mud and I do not trim them up only if I come in on low tide and back in to slip.

Rob, you'll have enough water, "low" is 4' or more. The bigger boats (the Silverton 43's, etc.) sometimes'll sit on the bottom, but I've never had a problem, and I draft 3' with the drives down.
