I have a 2000 merc I/O 7.4 MPI engine in a chaparral 270 of the same year. The engine stalled twice yesterday as I came up and over large wakes (around 5-6 feet). The boat had been running fine at around 25 mph in 2-4 footers.
The stall occured when I slowed a bit to take the large wakes of a ferry, the boat stalled immediately as the boat came over the top of the wake. As soon as the bow of the boat came up, over and started down on the wake, the engine died immediately.
This happened twice. First time the engine restarted after about 5-10 minutes and ran fine. The second time I cranked the engine for 10-15 minutes and it did not restart and I had to be towed.
When I got towed back to a marina and tied up, the engine started with no problem.
Checked fuel/water separator and there was no water contained within. Filter is relatively new. Also, starter/battery seems fine.
Any ideas? Puzzled and at a stuck at a marina far from home. Any help much appreciated
