Stripe removal? What is best?

I need to remove some damaged stripes from my hull. What works best and doesn't damage the gel??
 
A heat gun used carefully. Then acetone to remove the leftover glue
 
I've used a heat gun, paint striper, and oven cleaner, take your choice.
 
I used the Admiral's hair dryer. The strip-off wheel many swear by didn't do it for me. Does anyone want to buy a barely used one?
 
I would rather use a hair dryer than a heat gun as the heat gun could possibly heat the FG to point of discoloration. Hair dryer won't get that hot to do damage. Yes, acetone to remove any residual adhesive.
 
razor blade, then finished it off with goo gone. looked great.

i tried the eraser wheel thingy....miserable.

heat gun, no help either
 
I had a great experience with the eraser wheel thingie, and I had a lot of decal to remove.

If you use it, make sure you get the holder, and use a high-rpm tool. I used a 1200 RPM drill, which was just adequate. Oh -- and wear safety glasses!

joebtb - i am glad somebody had some success with that. since it is relative to the thread can you pass on any secrets you may have in using the stripe removal tool.
 
Hmm, not too many hints. High RPM tool seems best. I found the 4" version to be easier to control than the 6" version which flopped around a bit too much. Get the thing spinning, and then bring it up against the decal. Move it along in a direction opposite the revolution (see instructions). Follow up with an acetone wipe to remove the residual smearing. Definitely where safety glasses, and preferably long sleeves and gloves -- in my experience, bits of decal were flying everywhere.

a good power washer did the trick for me. of course i havent gotten the glue off yet.
 
If you use the razor blade technique,carefully stroke the blade backwards across a hard surface with a reasonable amount of downward pressure. This will slight curl the blade edge and significantly reduce the potential of damaging the gelcoat. Remember to used the blade with the same side up.

I used this method to remove a 13 year old stripe without any gouging.
 
The hair dryer works so well I've never tried anything else. It's also very good for removing those state licence decals that expire every three years. Heat 'em up; peel 'em off and clean up with Goo Off or acetone.
