We will be meeting up with some friends near Newport this summer (on the way to Nantucket) and I don't really want to spend the allotted three days just in Newport. Can anyone recommend a marina or cove that is worth visiting in the area for a night?

Thanks,
Jeff

Hi Jeff,
Do you mean in the Newport area or along the way to Nantucket? Cutty is a no-brainer stop on your way to Nantucket but its the polar-opposite of Newport. So, it depends on what your looking for. There are several anchorages in the bay that are on the quieter side (Dutch Harbor, Potters Cove). Course the Vineyard and Hyannis (I'm stopping there for the first time this summer) are along your way towards Nantucket.

HTH,
Tim

Potters Cove is nice. Greenwich Bay is nice, but I don't know if you can anchor there. Buttonwoods Cove and dinghy over to land and walk to Iggy's for some Clam Cakes and Chowda.

Cuttyhunk is a great stop, but if you have 3 days and only want to spend 2 in Newport, how about Bristol? It s not a big detour and it s a very nice town, home to the Herreshoff museum.

At this point my friends can only get away from work for a couple of days so I am thinking that we'd pick them up at Newport and then stay in the area...just not in Newport to explore the surrounding area since I need to drop them back off in Newport to pick up their car.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll check them out,

Wickford, RI. Lovely town up the bay, perfect for your needs.

If you want RI near Newport (think thats what you asked) - - Potters Cove - nice!, a gunk hole, if that's what you want. 1+ on Wickford. Wickford - Very Cool Wimsacal arts/farts town to explore. Kayaks et al. Jamestown, another alternate destination- across from Newport. The Narraganset rb2@gr5t Jamestown- local fav, and my fav restaurant....La Trottoria Simpatico

in Jamestown, RI...across form Newport, RI.

Yes t Wickford....beautiful town/village

Free town moorings to port after breakwater...marked in orange.

Nice public dock if you only want to tie up for an hour.

Potters cove is a great place to anchor overnight. Protection against the prevailing SW winds. Be careful if a storm comes in with NE winds. Great holding ground. Very popular on weekends...very quiet on weekdays. Nice place to swim off the boat
