I am going to survey on Monday and was wanting to ask advice from anyone out there with this setup about any items I should pay particular attention to. I ralize this is the surveyor's job, but just trying to get a heads up on any trouble spots that I should be aware of.

Thanks

Make sure they check the aft aux. fuel tank as they had a tendency to leak and a lot of owners have rendered them inoperable. You can always tell when there is or isn't fuel in the aft tank since the transom will sit higher that normal, if its full the exhausts will be about 1/4 underwater. Another thing thats been common in our area is the exhaust ports leaking when underway.

No other major inherent problems that I am aware of after having had about 15 of these boats surveyed for customers.

I have heard several people say their hot water tanks have died, the fridge on mine was replaced and messed up my galley floor when it died. Mine also has blisters towards the stern. Vaccuflush issues may exist also that I have yet to look at. I hope the one you are looking at was better cared for than mine. I bought it in October 2010 from Arkansas for 68k, hoping to get a good deal. I don't think I did.

I know this reply is a bit late but maybe it will be useful information to other Carver owners. We own a 1999 Carver 404. We bought it from very good friends. About 2-3 years ago while they still owned it, there were problems with 1 of the fuel tanks leaking. Carver declared the tanks defective and replaced them.

We had a 404 here in our area that we sold new...freshwater, and had to replace both main tanks. One, two years ago and the other this winter. No evidence of the auxiliary tank leaking (yet). Keep in mind that the 404 and 355/356 are essenially the same boat aside from the cockpit.

VT you could of had my boat for that price, but I know you wanted a fresh water only boat! A poorley cared for fresh water boat isn't worth any more than a closed cooling system maintained brackish water kept boat. My 2 cents for what it's worth.

At that time I don't think yours was for sale. I have thought that over a lot in the last year, could have, should have, etc... Your boat is a great deal on a great boat. Certainly I would not mind buying a salt water boat if it was repowered like yours. Hope you find a buyer soon so you can get what you are looking for.

James I was surprised when you sold your 31SB. But I think you are correct my boat wasn't for sale when you were looking. I happen to like Carvers there are a few in our marina. I rarely see one with diesels. I'm looking for a pilothouse trawler. Your right about should have , could have, etc.... done that over and over with my 40SB and changes/upgrades made to her.
