I've read that it is worthwhile to do a survey of a new boat because they find just as many issues as a used boat. This doesn't seem likely but I'd like to know what the pro's think.

Short of hiring a surveyor for a new boat what should be looked at if I'm doing my own survey beyond the obvious?

This scenario is a new boat left over, 2008. Does the fact that it is left over affect what could be wrong. This boat is fully warrantied, etc. but still I'd like to know everything is as it should be.

A good surveyor will find present and potential warrantee issues in the bud. Better to catch them now than in the wrong place at the wrong time.

ABSOLUTLEY. Some could testify might even be more important than a well cared for used boat!

depends on the size... for a small boat (under 30/35) you probably dont' need it, over 35/40 i think it's a good idea to survey a new boat. more systems, more potential problem is you are not experienced.

Pascal hits on systems in a larger boat. This is where numerpous faults may be expected, especially if the manufacturing plant was not right "on the money" during their final inspections ( costly to have a 100% quality assurance department).
In any event, I believe all boats need a hard-nosed pre-sale inspection by a capable and experienced person if only to establish a needed worklist.

Unfortunately it is a good idea. Speaks volumes for the industry as a whole.

I survey a good number of new boats. With performing a survey before the purchase, you will have the power of the deal to have any and all problems corrected prior to delivery. Also consider the possible issues that maybe unknown to you: Has the vessel been damaged and or repaired due to shipping, are there any disadvantages in regards to the design or power that has been installed. Consulting with a professional will show you the other side of the coin per say. Boating is suppose to be fun, undesirable surprises are not. If i can be of any help to you, please feel free to give a call 845-228-1071

My boat came with a five year warranty on the hull and two years on the maines. Still think a survey would have been needed? Boat is a Tiara open model.

Absolutely! Find those warrantee issues (and get them fixed) now, before you buy, not when you are out on the water! And some defects don't evidence themselves for years. You have more leverage to get these addressed before the sale than you ever will again.
