survey expectations

A friend of mine bought a 32 Sea Ray two summers ago. He had very limited boat knowledge. Had the boat hauled, paid for a survey. Same summer had boat hauled again, one of the Mercruiser Outdrives had a crack. It was suggested that the outdrive had been left in the tilt trailer position thru the winter and had held water, hence some stretching and cracks. When my friend called the surveyor to see why it hadn't been noted, all the indignant surveyor said was 'I stand behind my survey'.
Buyer beware. Heed the advice of the above posts !

darren93,

No vessel is sold as is. Every pre-purchase is contingent satisfactory survey and sea-trial. Your surveyor should be advising you throw the whole purchase process. There are certain standards that are expected when performing a pre-purchase survey. Like who is response able for what, when it comes to fees to complete a survey. From what ive read so far it seems to be about right. btw: I do survey vessels in Long Island. Let me know if i can be of any help.
