my motor was swamped this year and the water was up past my oil pan in the engine bay after i pumped the water out i fired it up and ran it for a while when i got home i checked the oil.the dip stick is totally white which tells me there is water in the engine,what do i have to do to insure there is no water in my engine for winterizing other than changing the engine oil. it is a 87 2.5 mercruiser
 
You really should have checked/ drained the oil first. expect starter,trim motor, battery cables, steering cable, to go bad too.
1 change the oil refill with 2 qts diesel, 2 qts cheap oil.run for 5 minutes and change oil and filter with 4 qts cheap oil.
2 run 15 minutes , drain and refill with good oil, run boat on water to get to normal temp. continue running motor till oil is clean again.
running on muffs wont work,
 
Yeah, fresh or salt water. Makes a lot of difference. If salt and you can't do all the work yourself, you may be better off selling (or scrapping) the boat and buying another one.
 
You started it without checking the oil??

At this point you need to drain it and pull the plugs. If salt water, fill it to proper level with diesel and crank it a. Number of times for 15 seconds letting the starter cool off. Drain and refill with oil, crank again with cooling periods. Drain and refill with oil, change the filter and put the plugs back in

If fresh water, you can bypass the diesel flush
 
Fwiw with all of the tales of using this or that in the crankcase, I would never put anything but oil in it. I would use cheap oil and filters, but still only oil. Once it's clean, then put the good oil in.
 
The reason for using diesel is that it is still an oil but is much lighter so it circulates better to get the salt out. With the plugs out, it is not going to start anyway,,,
 
Use 10 weight oil only. Diesel has no viscosity and provides almost no lubrication.
 
fresh water is not a big deal. PUt light oil in each cylinder rings and cylenders are the most sensitive to rust., get all the water out of the pan with a suck tube.Change the filter. Fill or over fill with cheap oil and spin it with plugs out. Drail and refill with normal oil and filter go for a run it is very important to getit hot anfd only a load will do that. Then see what the oil looks like. Ck the oil fill cap to see if there is any water drops still evident.Then winterize with oil in the cylendetrs. In spring be wary of stuch valves at first but if you ran it under load for an hour or so they will probably be OK
