swimming in AYC canals

Now I've seen everything! yesterday there were 4 little kids in a 3HP dink and tube going up and down the canal by A/B docks. sometimes the kids would get dumped off the tube and just swim around.. Saw at least 4 boats have to either swerve, stop or back up to avoid hitting them. I guess that's the nautical equivalent of "kids, go play in traffic!"
 
Crazy...and one can only wonder how many of the those boats just dump their heads overboard not to mention just the various motor fluids that probably just get pumped from bilges on a regular basis.
 
I saw them. Almost hit them near the gas dock. They got scared and they accelerated and of the kids on the tube almost caught his head on a anchor hanging low.

They came down our canal and we told them its not a play area.

Their parents need to take notice as it's one thing to putt around in a dink but if the dink is towing a tube, the tube has no control of where it goes!
 
The water in the canals there is gross at best, bay side is fine, but certainly not the canals.
 
Im in B17 and they were in front on my boat. Crazy kids ... besides the obvious risks of boat traffic and gross water that gets pumped from bilges you should never swim in a marina. There is a huge electrocution hazard. if a nearby boat connect to shore power was not successfully grounded they can receive a bad shock. People die from swimming in marinas. This is why boating education needs to be mandatory. Where were the parents. They should know better.
 
Anytime there is a safety issue on the water and especially when it involves children, the first action is to call authorities. Parents should be reprimanded for putting children's lives at stake. Leave a kid in a hot car, you get arrested. There should be no difference on the water.
 
Art, I'm over on "A" dock and I rode over to the pool on my bike - I saw the parents sitting dockside without even a care or clue where the kids were. crazy!!

I would've, but i had no clue who they belonged to. They are not my responsibility. Not knowing them, i wasn't going to go around asking people i don't know if they knew whose kids they are. This day and age, you don't know if saying something will cause arguments or worse.
 
At minimum a call to the marina office would be appropriate. A child should not be put in jeopardy because of parents stupidity.

is an extensive section about Electric Shock Drowning (esd). Coast Guard is pushing this information out for addition to boating courses. One of the references on that BoatUS page is CAPT Rifkin, who I've met and attended one of his lectures. From that I developed a section for our boating class several years ago. This year, thanks to help from GregoryS here at BoaterEd, I added "Flesh Eating Bacteria" this year. These issues are serious but also easily avoided.
