Every year right about now, I stare at my bottom paint in my gallon container and think of OK this year I am going to paint the bottom myself. I usually do it but the last few years i havent been well enough. Then I remember a few years back that Walter uses a guy named Ben for his painting.

I have Ben coming Wednesday (weather pending), and I figure for $3 a foot, it doesnt pay to do it myself.

Ben is a great hard working guy and the best part RELIABLE!

Whenever I find a good reliable worker I do my best to help them get more business. They are always grateful and will jump on any job for me.
 
$3 a foot that sounds very cheap does he travel? This price wouldn't cover his tolls to get to me. I would be happy to cover the travel expense as well at that price! I did it myself again this year but it is something I hate doing although my wife helped me this year and is was much easier she did a great job.

At his price, he has plenty of work locally. He has a real job, this is just a side gig for him. When I paint anything, I get more paint on myself and my surroundings than what I am painting :)
 
Friend who used to have a boat recommended only using 4" roller, he said it makes less of a mess than the 8".

I tried it a couple of weeks ago and I must say, I agree! With all the rakes and chines, there's not enough truly flat surface to justify the big roller.
 
Had a health problem and surgery two years ago and had to get someone to do the painting for me. Was very skeptical, but got another great recommendation from here and called Ben. Figured it would be a one shot deal.
After I used him it dawned on me: What was I thinking? His price is fair, he's neat, reliable, and punctual. I had to be nuts to go back to doing it myself. I really like that he uses my paint.
Used Ben again last year, and plan to keep using him.
One of the best things about having a forum like this to exchange local info is that you get some really great recommendations, and Ben was one of them.
 
X2 on the Mini Roller! I painted ours, on the trailer in the driveway. This year, first time. The small roller allowed me to do the strakes with the roller as well as the larger flat areas.

Warning, from at least my experience, the correct bottom paint color (at least for the "Hard" type I used) is BLACK. Mrs. wanted a color so I used Blue. I'm told Blue discolors less than my other choice, Green. One weekend in the water, settling onto the mud at low tide, permanent BLACK stains on the Blue. Pressure washer won't remove. The stains, that is. The paint, so far, is holding.
 
Ben is at the boat now painting, just checked the cameras. Pretty bad when the tip is almost the amount he charges to paint lol
