Thanks Regal

nitebell;

you may want to consider the possibility that even with the addition of a strainer this may not be the last chapter in your cooling system challenges. if you had enough sand/shells thru the pump to destroy the housing, you probably have a very restricted heat exhanger and possibly blocked riser passages. granted a proper strainer will filter down to a finer size than the inlet strainers on the outdrive or thru hull, but if you are ingesting sand, that will pass thru the strainer with ease and cause blockages in the riser and or heat exhanger tubes over time. it would be wise to check them out now. i highly reccomend installing an exhaust gas temp alarm. here is a low cost source for these; http://www.borelmfg.com/ this mounts just down stream from your riser and will sound first before you overheat in the event of a partial or complete loss of raw water flow. very cheap insurance against engine damage. very crital on a diesel application.

Hi Vic.
"may not be the last chapter in your cooling system challenges" I have a feeling that the only way to end the challenges, would be to get out of boating. The mechanic pulled the end plate from the heat exchanger and he thinks hi will be ok. He also checked the back pressure and that was fine, he had the same concerns as you suggest. Talked to Regal today and they passes it off as "It was an option" they also said that they never put strainers on closed systems for any boats. I find it hard to swallow that it was an option, when the instructions said "important" Also gouldn't find an exhaust gas temp alarm on the website, are they calling it something else? Sounds like a good idea to me.
I have a call into Yanmar US headquarters in Atlanta to see what they mean in the documentation. Oh; the last word from regal was a suggestion to file a claim on my insurance as a grounding. Yeah! sure.

yes, borel is calling it a raw water alarm. sorry for the confusion. the alarm monitors the exhaust gas temp at the riser, this is the first place a restriction in water flow will show up. if you shut down the motor at the first sign of water flow problems you should avoid costly problems of overheating. this is cheap insurance in my book and about the only way to overcome problems like picking up a bag on the intake.
