Maybe this is a topic for the detailing forum, but I figured it would get more attention out here.
I pride myself in my ability to remove most types of adhesive glues and residues with ease by using various products and a little elbow grease. But this one has me stumped! My buddy Tim bought a 1995 Trojan 36 Express that had about a 3" vinyl stripe running along the deck. It was pretty well weathered, and he decided he was going to remove it completely rather than taping over it with new stripe.
The vinyl itself came off fairly easy, but left this gray colored adhesive glue that is rock solid and not willing to come off. He tried the usual stuff at first, like a heat gun, finger nail scraping, Goo Gone, no results. Then he stepped it up and bought a tool that attaches to a drill ($40!) and it did not work once the vinyl was removed, it wouldn't touch the adhesive. So then he tried 3M Adhesive Cleaner (the stuff I have sworn by for years) and nothing! Then he tried acetone, even acetone wouldn't touch this stuff.
He has invested a good 8 - 10 hours so far, and has barely gotten 1/2 of one side done. He is at his most vulnerable now because he feels as if he can't put another minute into this hopeless project. I have tried to help but my suggestions have all been exhausted already. He is a member of BoaterEd but hasn't had time to post this question here, he's been too busy trying to get that crap off!!
So, if anyone knows of any other method to remove the most set-in, stubborn, aggressive, pain in the a$$ glue residue, please speak now, he really needs your help!!!
