The Point closing!

Yeah, sadly another Delta institution bites the dust...

I guess having customers like John Travolta wasn't enough to help even one of the long-time establishments stay open.

We have enjoyed many over-nighters at their docks and split our meals between them and Foster's Big Horn just down the street.

They've closed and re-opened before, so hopefully it won't be too long before someone else takes over.

As long as it isn't those knuckleheads that ruined Moore's! [:-yuck] [xx(] [:-skull]

So sad to read this. Restaurants is such a really tough business....especially when you have make all your profit in the summer.

Yeah, Liz, Makes me wonder how those Alaskans do it.

And The Lighthouse.

j-d, I think in Alaska they have a "captive audience"! I know that in Nome, there is the pizza place or the bar. Other then that, it is stay home and party by yourself!

Too bad. We used to stop there for dinner on our way to Sacramento.

Yep. Even though we stay at the Lighthouse RV park every now and then, and visit friends at Willow Berm, we never gave those nimrods a chance to see how bad they are. We have heard enough from other boaters to know to stay away!

I understand the seasonal aspect of the Delta businesses, but there is no excuse for operating an establishment and not following the laws of the various agencies. Especially when it involves health and safety issues.

Once again, we're sorry to see yet another long standing Delta business close down. I've been enjoying the Delta since 1967 and have seen a lot of changes throughout the years. Some good and some bad. It is never good to see the good ones close down. [:-cry]

I've been hanging out in the delta since 1992. I'm boatless now so don't get up there much any more. I still haven't ruled out moving up there but it is not as enticing as it used to be since it seems all the people and estalishments I knew and liked from the past, don't seem to be around any more.

That's true. The Delta is not what it used to be. Lost forever is the "river rat" lifestyle along with people that helped people just because they needed help and not for the almighty dollar.

Sad to say...

It's almost like when Hal Schell, as he used to say, "moved on to the marble orchard", things started changing for the worse.

Wow. You've been around forever. I'll bet you pounded beers with Earl Stanley Gardener and his broker friend that had a business where Marine Emporium is. Or should I say was. Looking at the pictures in his books, I couldn't even recognize it as the same place. Everything has changed.

No, never had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Gardener, though I do have his books. One of them was given to me by Hal Schell. He had quite the collection!

My early recollection of B.I. was Richard's Yacht Center at the docks of M.E., Diamond Yacht Sales over the Bridge (Penn Yann and Fiberform dealer)and Gary Carter's Houseboat rentals (which later turned into Carter's Marine the Bayliner dealer).

Also, we used to rent those green two story houseboats from S&H Marine at the Antioch Bridge. Those were a blast! If you look closely, you'll still find some afloat in the Delta. The last one that I recall seeing was in that long row of old boats at Herman & Helens.

Good times!!!

Of course, folks can always make the best of it, but some things will never be the same. And a few things shouldn't! LOL

But I'd take them all again in a heartbeat.

These days, I enjoy taking friends out on a "Get to know the Delta" cruise and not only talk about the current stuff, but the "way things were stuff" too. [:-pirate]

Oh yeah, one other memory of B.I. that I have (as well as an old picture of it somewhere in my archives), is the old billboard that was near Fisherman's Cut that advertised the "upcoming" waterfront home project on B.I. It turned out to be the now bankrupt Delta Coves project. That billboard was from back in the late 70's! It only took about 30 years to happen...

I'm craving a nice juicy steak from The Point. Maybe we'll head over there this w/e while we still can.

Merry Christmas! [;-xmas]

I never warmed to the idea of a "mini-Disco Bay" on BI. I just had a bad feeling about it. Now it is dragging down the entire island economy!!!

I spent many, many wonderful hours in the Delta and miss the way it was too. But we can't go back even if we return.....

Yeah, every time that I drive by it on my way to Sugar Barge to get the motorhome, I just shake my head.

It was really a boom or bust idea, and with the way things are, it has certainly been a bust.

Once they start building homes on those lots, they will all seem to be skyscrapers due to the height that they had to build the lots to keep them from flooding. Plus, they certainly won't ever have the B.I. "charm" that a lot of the existing places have. As it sits now, not only the development, but the entire island appears to be a ghost town.

Maybe in another 10 or 15 years the island might see the payoff from the development.

Heck, B.I. doesn't even have their own fire dept anymore...

Sad times...

Did Hal give you that book before or after your mother threw a drink in his face?

Richard's Yacht Center is where Earl Stanley Gardner had his base of operations according to his books. There was a small trailer park there at one time. He would roll over in his grave if he could see how things have changed.

Ha! You have a great memory! [:-graduate]

About twenty years later. He knew that I was looking for it for quite some time and when we met at Bob's at the Marina for lunch one day, he surprised me with it. He had a few extra copies, so he gifted me with one. He was quite the gentleman.

The Delta will never be the same without him...

Regarding Richard's Yacht Center, Ed Thoreson was a salesperson there and an acquaintance of mine.

When RYC closed down, he opened one of the first "Help-U-Sell" franchises in the area. His office was in Brentwood. He was always seen driving his white caddy sedan around Disco Bay. Sadly, he passed away quite a few years ago. His wife took over running the business and then I lost touch with them. The last I heard, she closed up shop when the real estate bubble burst...

I got my (used) copies of Gardner's books off Amazon for a fairly reasonable price. Once you read one, you've pretty much read the other two. :)

I found Hal's Dawdling on the Delta sitting on a shelf at a second hand shop in Stockton and bought it for $1.50 several years ago. I got Cruising California's Delta directly from him when I couldn't find it anywhere else a couple of years before he passed away. I tried to pay him extra for delivery since he met me at the now gone Lyons restaurant on Benjamin Holt, but he wouldn't take more than list price. Very interesting guy - I wish I had been able to spend more time talking to him.
