Theft - How common is it?
I never worry too much about theft from the boat while docked in the home port. I'm in a quiet smaller marina in the upper Chesapeake in the Northeast River and didn't think it was a problem. A few weeks ago a large robbery took place stealing 60 thousand dollars of electronics off boats in my marina and mostly from the marina next door. The police said they came in approximately at 1 to 2 AM by small boat and start methodical going down the dock and hitting every boat. TVs, DVD, Satellite Radios, GPS, radar, Depth finders and in one boat took the whole dash. I guess to hard to get the electronics out.
Two questions; How common is this and do you take your electronics off the boat? I now remove and hind the electronics but leave them on the boat. The sad part is the items may show up on e-bay, but the police probably will not pursue because of a low conviction rate, hard time to prove and the time involved. The thieves are smart enough not to keep all the items at one spot, so if the police move in they may only get one item. Do you have a full description and serial numbers for your electronics handy for police?
