Greetings, New Englanders. My homeport is Glen Cove, NY (on the north shore of Long Island). I'm going to spend a day or two this season in Branford, CT and heard you folks may have some advice regarding puttering around the Thimbles. I've read about them on line and have both paper and electronic charts for the area, but there's nothing better than advice from someone who has "been there. done that". Thanks in advance.

i love the Thimbles! stopped there last spring on the way to Nantucket and really enjoyed that stop! I hope i can fit it in the schedule this year...
I got in between the islands but didn't feel we had enough swinging room for the night (70 footer), so we anchored on the east side. There is also room on the west side if needed as well as between the islands and the mainland (marked anchorage on chart)
you can dinghy in to the little town, i hear there are a couple of restaurant there, i believe there is a launch/water taxi too.

My wife and I have spent many summer weekends on the hook at the Thimbles, mosly between High and Money Island. Just a couple of years ago you could barely find a spot with enough swing to anchor there was so many boats there on Saturdays. Last year there was a noticeable reduction in the amount of boats and many weekends there were just a few. At the time we chocked it up to rising fuel prices, somehow this year I expect there to be fewer boats on weekends as well. Theres still some large raftups but nothing like in the past. I'm not going to complain about fewer boats there, much less hassle to anchor and a lot more peaceful.
Spent my whole life in the Thimbles. It's a great place to go for the day or night. I have a mooring by Cut In Two and spend a lot of time there. It's also less crowded there. Follow the channel and you'll be fine. Don't go where you don't know because there are rocks under water at high tide. Stay by East or West Crib and your good.
There's plenty of room between Money and High Island and it's also easy to get in and out of. I don't believe there are any resturants in Stony Creek that I would recommend but there are plenty in Branford. If you head into the Brewers East yard on the Branford River, there are a few nice restaurants in walking distance.
