Doing a little advanced planning.

This season, we are looking to do a few trips to different places than we have. In addition to our planned big trips to Block and Atlantic City, we are hoping to head up the Hudson for July 4 weekend.

I am also thinking about doing a south shore trip for Memorial Day weekend. I'm unsure as to whether I should look to find a marina or drop the hook somewhere.

What do you guys suggest?
 
Mark, if you are considering the south shore let me know when you firm the trip dates. Where on the SS would you be planning to go? Even though it is the Memorial holiday weekend, I have always been able to get into places. Do you belong to any formal group? Like a power squadron?

Down the river and through the harbor.

We have been considering the south shore as a future alternative to where we currently are. I think it would give us a feel for the kind of boating, the crowds on the water and an opportunity to meet some of you.

We have spent nights in Oyster Bay but mostly on a mooring. When on the hook by ourselves, I don't sleep very well.:) When rafted with friends, I tend to be a little more comfortable. I have a partner who keeps his boat at SS3 and never uses it and a good friend in BayShore. I can probably get them pried away from the dock. Other places we go, we get a slip.

Anyway, I'm thinking as a 2 or three night trip, coming around to Fire Island Inlet is not such a stretch but from what I've read, getting a slip on FI may be a challenge.
 
Our club does not allow transients, but I can have a guest. The reason I was asking if you were a member of some club or Power Squadron, we do allow members of certain clubs and groups in when we have room. And the way it looks now there will be slips available in our outer basin. What’s your beam?

Also if you come on a Friday you should have no problem to get into Atlantique. I go every year following our opening day ceremonies on Saturday and there are plenty of slips. It falls around my birthday and that is where I enjoy spending it. This place does not get busy until late June.

Mark, when a visiting guest or a member of another YC or Power Squadron comes. It is $63.00 per night, $8.00-$16.00 Electric and $5.00 for cable. They have full use of the facilities, pool, tennis, BBQ’s etc. They give their CC# to the office when arriving. There are no cash transactions; your CC gets billed at the end of your stay.

Will do. Looking at Memorial Day weekend or the July 4th if we don't go up the Hudson.

I haven't forgotten Atlantic City. Will let you know when we figure it out.

Does that price include a shuttle to the rub and tug place in west babylon?

Mark, are you just coming for the weekend or can leave a couple days earlier? Maybe we can try to meet up at Watch Hill, but with the holiday weekend if the weather is nice I don't think we could get slips. Might have to be a Thursday arrival. Another option might be trying for a raftup in one of the coves.

I may be able to schedule a day or two earlier if I plan it right. I'm pretty flexible as to a raft-up or a marina. From what I've read in the past, Watch Hill would seem tough to do but you guys know better than me.

April 1 splash date. Can't wait.
 
Alanitque has always had slips available during Memorial Day weekend and it’s much closer to the FI inlet. As mentioned above I have been going for the past 4 years on Saturday following our commissioning day ceremonies. Get there mid day Friday and even better. Kids are still in School and many boats still not launched. Also, they only start checking for Islip residents late June.

If you don’t care about electric or water Kismet is also nice, which is even closer to the inlet. If you go early Friday you will have no problem. Close to the beach, and has a couple of restaurants. When I go, it’s like a worry free raft-up.

In addition.. My offer still stands that you can come to our YC, real nice place… and if we do a day raft-up it is not far from Hemlock or Coast Guard cove.
 
I think Flynn's takes reservations for holiday weekends.
If your on the inside there, its not bad, getting in is a little tight.
Food is not the best, but your within walking distance of other good places.
Not sure of their prices, but I stayed there and it didn't seem bad since they gave you a credit for food and drink. I was on the outside though and now and then you would bounce a little!

Rob, I have checked this out every year. They don't kick you for being a non resident until late June. And that’s only on the weekends. None of my traveling friends are residents and get in early and late in the season. In fact they don’t start charging until June. Anyway I will post further information as the season begins.
