Has anyone used/own the craftsman socket sets where the bolt can go straight through the ratchet head. I have seen by craftsman and a few other brands. There is no need for deep well and regular sockets since the threaded part can go through the head of the ratchet. They claim you can get in tighter spaces because of their design, as well as no limit on depth. The set they have has adapters to work regular sockets as well. I was thinking of getting a set for my boat... (a 245 sea ray weekender with a 383 stroker and BIII) since it seems like a very versatile compact set... add in a few extra sockets of things i know i need and it would be a lot more compact a versatile set then what i have now. I was wondering if anyone has used them to know if there is some flaw to them or what not.

thanks

They seem to be a good thing to have, but there are still situations in which you'll need a deep socket and possibly an extension or two. That would defeat the use of those pass-through sockets. I have a set of 3/8" and 1/4" Metric and American sockets in a plastic case (Craftsman, because for many decades that was the only brand I bought). They'll great, except the case takes up too much room on our 24' Chaparral. I was thinking about taking all the pieces out of the case and just putting them in a leather carry-all but then they're harder to find when I need one. Hy

Just like any other tool there are situations where they are very good. As noted above the do not totally solve the problem that deep sockets are required.

I agree with George. Once you have and use ratchet wrenches you will never want to use plain wrenches again. That said, I have a pass through socket set and it comes in very handy at times. But I would spend my money on the ratchet wrenches first.

Keep your eyes open for Sears to have a sale on them.
