Timing Cover paint

Replacing the timing cover on my 2000 Volvo 3.0l New cover came unpainted. I am assuming it needs to be painted? What kind of paint should I use and whats involved in the prep? Thanks.

Check to see if it has the front seal. Wipe down with lacquer thinner to remove any oil. Paint with any enamel paint. I'm doing exactly the same thing with the brake booster for my van.
 
Charlie, you need to sand the booster all the way down to "fresh" metal then prime and paint, otherwise it may "peel off" again. Those brake fluid is really nasty.
 
For new unpainted engine parts I've been using acetone wipe , Scotch-Brite scuffing and Dupli-Color engine primer and Dupli-Color ceramic engine paint*(>"500*F") . The local NAPA has them.

* edit: the can does say "enamel"
 
DeeVee, The booster is a refurbished unit at $95. The outside has been sansblasted so it has a very good prep on it. I first found out about brake fluid helping a friend back in high school. He lwft a nice ring on the fender of his '58 Merc.

Any company trying to sell a new product like 'Ceramic' paint sure isn't going to tell you any details. The ability to stand up to heat is the paints ability to bond to whatever is being painted. Ceramic, for instance, is a fine power as any additive to the paint. It does not change paints ability to stand up to internal or external temperatures but more to external temps. It's the paint itself that gives it heat resistance. As for ceramics, it takes 1600*-1700* to fire and just a little lower to start to bond. It's mostly a gimmic.
 
Charlie - I'm sure you are right and I will sleep better knowing my risers, alternators, starters, water pumps, pulleys and brackets will be protected a scosh better from external heat .:D I figure if it is ceramic I could probably eat off the parts if necessary. I hope it doesn't come to that.

Or I could try changing to a 1650* T-stat for that really effective ceramic bond but then I'd have to abandon the enamel paint element.

I do recall Geo. V.P. advising that ceramic lined exhaust parts from Merc would tend to craze over time and allow corrosion to crevice creep, but this enamal seems to have good adhesion over time so far...... and the ceramic gimmick does sound a little cool as long as I don't breathe it when applying.
 
Front main seal is the reason for the cover swap. Went with Dupli-Color prep spray and VHT enamel.
 
I hope that front cover wasn't expensive. The front cover seal is the easiest seal to replace.

I remember Geo saying that. I would have expected a ceramic coating anywhere on exhaust manifolds, especially if it's in the exhaust passages, to be baked on. Wouldn't be a big deal. Probably dipped in a slurry solution of ceramic powder. Anywhere they don't want the ceramic they'd have to air dry or low oven dry then brush off the powder from unwanted areas.

Costwise, they shoulda' developed SS exhaust systems Like I did. In one swoop, they woulda' eliminated water intrusion at the manifold riser joint and water reversion from the end of the riser. But then engines and exhaust systems would have too long a life span.
 
You definitely did design yourself a great finely-tuned exhaust system, Charlie. For your engine that is.
