Today was more plumbing day.

First I used Rommers method to salvage my old vent filter and make it new. Of course I had to pull my fridge to get to it but it was doable.

Then I came home. Not boating related. Noticed my lawn was browning. Flipped on sprinklers and heard a odd noise and no pressure. I found a root had grown into the line. Got out the shovel, axe and my sprinkler tools.

Why would they bury a serviceable part like the head filter?

I asked myself the same question and I thought about moving it. If you look on the filter it is suppose to be installed higher than tank. Since tank is in floor it has to go up thru a cabinet and the only one has the fridge. Would of been nice if they made it into the opening cabinet next to fridge but they must of felt it didn't belong where food would be.

I just did my vent filter this past weekend. Since the filter was already modified it cost me a whopping $5 for the charcoal media. I can't believe they charge $80-$120 for new ones. Less than $10 in parts!

I use a hanger with a hook at the end to pull out the foam end I dump the contents into a cup to measure how much should go back. I refill will the same to a little more and either put back or replace the foam. I have done this the last three years, I buy the large canister of charcoal which does about three filters. I have two tanks so I have to refill two filters per year this is a huge savings.
I have seen a bunch of different ways people cut and then put fittings on to reattach I'm just not sure I understand how you put them back together without spilling a bunch out in the process? Filling from the top using a funnel just seems much easier but pulling the foam out the first time can be a little tricky but not difficult at all.

I just out them together. Didn't spill any. The hub I used had no inside part and the 2 ends didn't meet so the hub has some charcoal in it.
I also didn't measure. The thing was full of charcoal with 2 foam pieces. I washed the foam. Dried it. Then filled it with charcoal.
Not sure there is much science here and I doubt you can over stuff it since when you put it together you get some loose area.
