How do you deal with tolls on rental cars. I've heard horror stories of being billed even if you pay with cash.

Thanks Andy. My sun pass is glued to the windshield. I cal buy a new one but I will be in NY, VT,NH and ME so dont know if they all accept sun pass.

I believe that up here in the Northeast, they take EZ Pass only. Maybe others will chime in.

In Illinois you can pay online. Maybe like that elsewhere. That way you have a record.

Take your SunPass off (use velcro next time!).
What states can you use SunPass in?
They include: Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina, Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Maine. Such a reciprocal system is required to be in place nationwide by Oct. 1, 2016.Nov 12, 2014

Ask the rental car company ahead of time. There are no tolls in VT except for a few scenic mountain roads in Stowe, Manchester, and Burke. NY and NH take Easy Pass. I'm guessing ME does, too.

Most car rental companies I deal with have a slide open compartment on the windshield that reveals the transponder. If you include "tolls" in your rental it will automatically be billed to your agreement.

Don't they charge a daily fee for the trasponder even if there are no tolls?
Do you have a preferred company or are they all much the same these days.
I haven't done much car rental recently so I am unfamiliar with how things are done today.

A lot of the tolls up here have gone cashless which means on NY metro bridges they will supposedly mail you a bill or in MA they say you have x amount of days to pay at some web site. Was through NH into Maine in the last few weeks and they still had cash lanes. So it's a mixed bag.

No,
Avis first, Hertz second, National third.

Yes, that was my recent experience. I rented a car from Budget a month ago, and the daily fee was $3.95 with a maximum of $19.75. If you're a Costco member, it's hard to beat their rental car rates.

With a rental the bill would go to the company. Then what ?

Last time (2017) I rented was out of Ohara and I declined the transponder. 2-3 months later I got charged the tolls that I incurred on the CC that I used to rent the car. As I understand that is common practice in Il
Good luck

When I drove from VT to the Miami Boat Show 6 months ago my EZ Pass was not compatible with the SunPass system, so I bought a SunPass transponder in FL. Subsequently, neither system has notified me of its new compatibility with the other.

You'll get a bill from the rental company for sure. I've had that scenario with my employees and their expenses vouchers. What I can't say is whether you'll just get charged for the toll, or whether service charges would be tacked on.

NY may give you options to pay based on the license plate and date and avoid them mailing a bill.

This link covers most of the NY metro area bridges I think. There's a pushbutton for rental and loaner cars.

I don't see where MA has this.
