I am trying to get a head start on my laundry list of spring "to do's". It is still cold here in MN, average temps around 25 degrees. I will be bottom painting this spring, and I am wondering if I can sand the bottom paint that's currently on the boat while it's still cold? Will sanding now and painting in over a month make a difference?
Also, the original factory paint seems to be a hard paint, not ablative. When I run my finger across it, I get no black marks at all. When I rub my finger above the water line on the paint, I get black. So it seems that the recent paint (last year, before I bought the boat) was an ablative that wears down, and the old stuff underneath is a hard paint that does not. Should I just sand the bottom and apply an ablative that wears down, like Micron?
By the way, I (obviously) boat in fresh water, Mississippi River (if you can call that fresh water).
