Hey gang, one thing that is driving me crazy about my new ride, when I turn on the cabin lights every light in the cabin comes on. Its like the Vegas stripe or a 747 comming in for a landing in the cabin. There must be 8 lights that come on, with no option to operate them one at a time. I was thinking about getting some of those self battery powered LED lights to place under the galley. Its just way to bright in the cabin with all of those lights on, not to mention the drain on the battery. Any thoughts? 2008, 2565

It is a real pain not to mention the heat.

I have a single light between the head and the aft bunk we put on some times to cut down on the light.

When I figure out how to take one of those lights down I will see if I can put toggles on them to cut down the glare.

Do you have a picture of the lights you want to disassemble?

Assuming they are the same type as I have taking them apart is easy once you know the secret. On the face of the light which is metal are a series of raised rings. One of those rings actually hides a joint where you can use a thin blade screw driver or sometimes your finger nail to separate the 2 sections.

The boat is 150 miles away all waxed and polished in my driveway.

Borst;

easy solution. go to marine supply store and replace the bulbs with ones that are 1/2 to 1/4 the wattage of the ones you have now. yes you can use drop in replacement LED lights, they are about $20 a piece and will cut the heat and power by 3/4 but they are nearly as bright as a 10 watt bulb. the alternative is to install a dimmer on the switch. be very carefull if you go that route to get one that is rated for low voltage use and that the max. connected wattage is less than the rated wattage of the dimmer. also the dimmer will put out a significant amount of heat itself so location of the dimmer is important so it can shed the heat.

hope this helps.

Vic33004 and Roomer, sounds like a good solution. I am not sure if I would trust myself with a dimmer. ALso I hate to cheapin the looks by placing those cheap LED stickup lights. I just want the cabin to be dimmer with less lighting. My friend has a 28 Rinker, each light has its own switch. A nice feature.

Yup, those are the lights I'm talking about. IIRC the second "ring" is the part you pry out.

Borst, they make the same lights, each with individual toggle switches built in. Price is $5 apiece. Not sure it is appropriate for me to post the link. PM me if you need the site.

borst;

the LED's i mentioned are not stick up pucks. these are drop in replacement bulbs that go in the existing fixture. the only difference is they are generally a lot cooler color temp than incandecent lamps.

Gary, Links are always apreciated.

I would like to put switches on mine as I do not like the light from LED's

I also have a #2665 and have the same issue with the lights. I ordered a DC dimmer from West Marine, but it burned out in 2 days. If anyone can provide pics of the toggle switch option, i'd love to see it!

Thanks,

Cliff,
"I ordered a DC dimmer from West Marine, but it burned out in 2 days."

I would think you ordered the wrong one, you need to add up the amount of watts all those bulbs are drawing then buy the right dimmer that can handle that load.

Do a google for dimmer switch for boat. Also check boat fix to see if they sell them.

Someone on the "used to be" RO site had posted a link to a supplier that offered a huge assortment of different lites, switches, cabinet handles/knobs, etc. Maybe someone will remember the link, they may have an option for you, as I remember it the pricing was quite fair.

The reason I want switches instead of a dimmer is to be able to choose what light is on for reading or have just the ones over the galley.

I am even considering installing a light like the ones in the bunk near the galley to only light up that area.

I am suprised that Regal didn't seperate these lights into two banks. One for the V berth and one for the galley.

I guess they just make them but don't spend any time on them.

I think Kelly posted a link on the old forum for a marine overstock company... I still have the link, and they do sell lights there...

I can't do a PM without an anchor.. but I can do email.. at shadow7118 on AOL... will be happy to email the link..

I think Regal is getting the message. I have an 08 2665 and there are now two switches for the main cabin lights. One for the forward dinette area and one for the galley area. In addition there is one light on a separate switch in front of the mid-cabin berth. There is also a "night light" near the stairs that is a low wattage light with a opaque lense that puts out a soft and much lower amount of light.

those hocky puck lights look like they are halogen. HD carry many types of those see if any of those offer a solution.
