Town of Islip Slips

I've been on the waiting list for 5-6 years now for a 10 ft beam. I just got a call this week, the have a slip in West Sayville.

I already have a deposit down at my normal marina so I'm can't lose out on the money, would it be possible for me to take the slip and then lease it out to someone else? I'm not looking to make a profit, I just don't want to lose my spot on line, I hear you have to take the slips when they give them to you and then you can move up to better.

I'm not familiar with how the town runs it. Do they check up on the boats registrations? Anyone familiar with the process?
 
Jeff, I don’t have a definitive answer. But being an Islip resident and have inquired about slips and also get my Atlantique sticker thru the “Islip System” I would say no way. Just to get my sticker I have to provide 4 proofs of residency and also boat ownership. I could be wrong and I am sure another RO may know better. If you can’t sublet and I am not trying to spend your money, I would take the slip and try to rent your current. Even if you take a double hit now, next season you will have a savings.
 
I use the village of Lindenhurst slips and they woun't let you sublet and they do check,and they say you can't leave it unused.
 
I think your best bet is to sub lease the the other slip, not the town slip.

The town will not let you sublet the slip. If they find a boat in your slip and it does not match your numbers they fine you, you lose the slip and tow the boat. The town has people that go around checking the boat registration with the slip number( I met her last year) to make sure the right boat is in the right slip.
It took me 6 years to get my slip at Browns river.
 
Mike, How is the Browns River Marina?

The slip they called me about is in the West Sayville Marina, built out into the bay. Seems like very little protection.

I like to go down and hang out on the boat some times. Not sure if the family will be able to with the rocking down at this marina.

The one we have been out is up the Patchougue River, very protected.
 
I was finally offered a slip this year at Forge River, Mastic, in Brookhaven. Much as I would have loved to save money, I had to turn it down. There are no bathrooms, no electricity on the floating docks, and not enough parking for the number of boats at the marina. Years ago when I trailered our former boat, I, like many others, parked on the side streets because of the lack of parking. On too many occasions, I got caught in the parking ticket blitz there. Even though there were no signs up, it seems parking on residential streets was illegal. I even got a ticket once for the car and another one for the trailer! They stuck both under the wiper. You get what you pay for. The marina in Moriches is twice as expensive, but the bathrooms are clean, there's plenty of parking, and water and electricity are right there on the dock. In addition, the people who work there care about their customers. Now if only, the fishing were better.
 
You can turn down the slip once and keep your name on the top of the list , you cannot keep a different boat in the slip. Next year you have to take the slip they offer or go back to the bottom of the list. I had the same problem about 6 or seven years ago
 
The slip at that marina will be rocky, we have gone their on windy days and the boats were moving. My neighbor keeps his kids boat there and he says it's not to bad.
I was thinking of moving my boat there because the mosquito's eat you alive at dark in Browns river.
Jeff, where do you keep the boat now and is it much more expensive than the town.
 
I just went thru this with town of oyster bay. My name came up for a slip at tappen marina after a 4 year wait and I had a $500 deposit at a brewers.
I let the money go because even with the deposit I am still $3060 ahead! $5900.00 at brewers vers $2340 at the town. Yea brewers is a much nicer marina but I can't turn down a savings like that. Thats a lot of gas!
 
I keep going back and forth. Looks like town slip will be about #1,200 cheaper for me.

Bad
- I don't like the town marina, not protected,Teenage Hang out, possible Vandalism
- No Bathrooms
- No Restaraunt
- No Ferry Service - Seems a few times a year we take friends back from WH who took the ferry over, they can walk to their car from our slip
- Longer ride to our main stay, watch hill

Good
- Cheaper
- Can move to better slips eventually
- Closer to house

The admiral wants to stay where we are.......
 
With me the town slip was the only realistic way I was keeping the boat in the water. When I first moved out here I had it in a marina but the cost was a killer.With the town slip you get what you pay for, A space with little or no amenities. Jeff, you have to keep the admiral happy. As long as the cost is not a problem. Good luck.
