Trailer hitch???????

My daughter is breaking my balls to get a trailer hitch on her 2005 Jeep Liberty, so she can take the jetski to the local ramp.

Any sugestions on who to use?

Also, anyone waant to volunteer to show her how to tow a jet ski?

I have no patience, may need some support on this venue :)

Towing forward is easy, backing down the ramp is another story. The minute the jetski going down the ramp and disappear in her mirrors, the fun is begun. Try mounting two bicycle poles on each side of the trailer so she can see where the trailer at when backing down the ramp. Holding on the bottom of the steering wheel when backing down also help, want the trailer goes left, push left, go to the right, push right. Make correction little by little to avoid jack knife.

Don't have any suggestion on which hitch to use, most of mine are factory equipped.
 
Walter, I've used a place called Hitch King several times. They have a place in Queens but the guy lives in Bethpage (if I remember correctly) and does the install at his house for people also. He was the best price I got and he also claims to give money back if you sell the car, etc. towards a new hitch. Don't know if he's still around but the old receipt I have lists the number as 718-353-6078

A lot of aftermarket hitches are "no-drill" meaning you use exisiting holes in the vehicle and it simply bolts on. Sometimes you add backing plates and sometimes you fish the bolts in with special wires furnished with the hitch. Online for about $150 for the Liberty hitches, some come with the drawbar. Install it yourself. The site I checked said 30 minutes no-drill install. Don't forget trailer light wiring will also be needed. The sites have kits that plug in for that, too.

Speaking of Jeep Liberty's, what year is it?
They just had some major recall on 2002 - 2006 years.

I found with my truck that it was easier to backup jetski when I opened the back hatch. I could not see the jetski with it closed. I only saw it in the mirrors and its hard to back down with just mirror vision.

I will help show here how as well if needed. As for the hitch, I know people who have used u-haul but if you want a factory one, Jeep probably does it too.

I have no patience, better someone teach her that is not too close. I am going to buy it, wire it, etc. Did this on a few cars when I was a kid. After reading a little bit on the internet (No Drilling) soumds like it will be easy.

You don't need a very heavy duty hitch for a jetski. Total weight with trailer is probably less than 1000 lbs.

Don and I can do the hitch whenm we install your hardtop. We should have extra glue and nails!!
 
Walter.............. GOOD LUCK trying to teach your daughter to back up a car with a trailer behind it.........its just something about daughters & cars.......that just don't mix.

It took me 2 cars.....just to teach my daughter to STOP when the car in front of her stops . :(

Barb..........Hitch King is still around.....he's on Northern Blvd and Utopia Pkwy....in Queens. I used him many years ago when we had our towable 22'er.
I recently used Neil at East Coast Trailers ( he advertizes everyday in Newsdays marine section ). Just called.....gave him the vehicle info......2 days later I stopped by...and he bolted it on.

Now I need to do it again for the new truck.

I used Tent and Trailer City of Hempstead. I have a 2008 Honda Odyssey and purchased a hitch from them. Bolted it on. Six bolts. They are made to fit the production year, make, model of what you want it on. There price was very competitive with buying online. Once you get done with the shipping and packing online they were actually cheaper. They do installations too. This is all they do, mostly industrial hitches but service rv's, and any trailer combo you have. Was very pleased with the service. web site is also www dot trailercity dot com. 516-486-0960

Don, is Neil the guy with the long blond hair? He used to live in my neighborhood and I've looked at some trailers her had awhile ago.

I'll 'third' hitch king. I called them thinking oh great, Bethpage, but they wanted me to go to Queens. Which was basically a little dump of a yard with some trailer offices off Northern Blvd near the Clearview. They had frame hitches all over the ground and miraculously had the perfect one for my car at the time. Installed it quickly and correctly so no complaints. But it would be a pain to go in there if you didn't otherwise need to. I happen to come down the Clearview on the way home from the office most days so it wasn't a big deal.
 
The key to backing is not using the rear view... as dave said pop the hatch....

But u do loose sight of the trailor as u back down the trailer.... So those pole things come in handy...

I used to back down my inlaws 36 footer down a curving ramp in the rockaways... that was alot fun ...
