Transducer plug

As I am cleaning up the electric on a 37 year old boat, I came across this thru hull transducer plug that twists on. My question is, if there is a way of adapting this plug for modern electronics or is it obsolete? Sorry for the pic, it is in a closet.

It's a standard BNC connector. If the transducer is still good you can make a mating connector with a pigtail and put the correct connector on it or just cut the BNC off and put a connector on the wire.

If you can figure out if it is an Airmar T/D and which model , they have a cross reference guide that includes the internal wiring diagram (at the far right of the tables) of their T/D's that pair with various sounders:

If you can take inside and outside pics to share with Airmar they might be able to help you figure out what it is . They also often had tape labels denoting the model on the cable within a foot of the the T/D stem, but they tended to fall off or lose printing after a number of years.

Maybe just a T/D formerly to a simple depth gauge/fathometer?
 
With only two wires the wiring diagram is pretty simple.
 
Even Radio Shack has BNC connectors and various BNC to other type of RF adapters.
You need a BNC male to mate to that connector.

Is there a way to test the transducer? If it's good what would it mate with? Is as Sandy suggests it good for a depth finder only?

I believe there is still a positive and negative (white and black?) and I "doubt" anything would be hurt reversing the wires if guessing wrong, but ...?.

But you should still try to find out what T/D it is if you hope to use to use it, as mismatching frequency between T/D and depthfinder display unit would at least likely result in inaccurate depths, if it read at all.
There were several +/- kHz variations on the popular ~~200kHz T/D frequency. And it may have been a different freq. altogether.

If the T/D is the old clunky boat shaped type that stuck out with high drag ( like Radarsonics model 201 and some Airmars) , even on a trawler I believe I would want to get it out of there and replace with a newer flush-mount T/D matching a new depth display.

I don't know how to test the T/D. I recall for one of my T/D's Airmar told me I could look for some specific ohms resistance as an initial check ,but the only way to tell if it was really working properly was for them to test it on their complex electronic diagnostic tester.
 
The transducer is original equipment as it has the same copper ground tape as the rest of the engine room. I dove under the boat yesterday and found like Sandy had described, "the old clunky boat shaped type" transducer with wheel for speed. I'm going to leave it for now, but eventually it will come out, along with three of four other thru hulls that are not needed anymore.
