We (i.e. 4 boats) are planning to head north from Middle River to the Sassafras and we would like to go inside (west) of Pooles Island on a Friday. Is there a way of checking a head of time to see if that area is closed to boaters? If not, I thought we would check via ch 16 just before we depart. Who would we contact?

We've used this route on weekends but not a weekday.

From their website, the restricted waters are off limits from 7:30 am to 5 pm everyday (including weekends). But that doesn't seem right because I know I have been in there as well on the weekend. I actually tried to call them to ask but couldn't find anyone who seemed to know the rules. I just got a lot of "I think.." I did see on one part of their website that if they closed the area during permited hours that they would have patrol boats stationed around the perimeter that would intercept and warn approaching boaters. They also mentioned that they will hail a boat from channel 16 or 12. I guess you could trying calling aberdeen proving ground patrol on 16 and see. Sorry I couldn't be of more help but would be interested if you find anything out.

My slip neighbor captains the APG patrol boat. They encourage people to call them if not sure about the status of the area.

I might suggest you call APG Range Operations a day or two before you go. Their number is 410-676-0960

You should contact the patrol boat on channel 68 (or 16 if 68 fails) before approaching Pooles Island during the week to get their current status.

Here's a PDF explaining the APG restricted zone. Might be good to keep one onboard. I do!
