Anybody check out the status of Bakers Bay across from Treasure. I went to their website and it mentions the marina is open.

Wondered if any shops or restaurants are open?
 
John funny you should mention that. Today we went around the Whale and passed by. For us, and from a distance, it looks about the same as last year. We heard people hailing them to ask about pulling in for lunch, but did not hear a definitive response. There was a large sail boat (mega style) and a mega yacht in there that we could see.
We noticed still unfinished construction on buildings that were in progress last year. I would strongly suggest a phone call before committing to that place as a destination for any length of time. I'm not dissing the place. It could be they are maintaining an exclusive nature that would preclude discussion over the VHF. But we pulled into their water in the dink last year and we were appalled to the point that we would not consider the place as a destination. It was that dead and spartan. A lot of sand and brown foliage.
Most places down here are empty. Spanish Cay had us as an overnite with one other boat, and that was it. We are now in Orchid bay and there are maybe 4 boats here. The only gas available in the whole area is at Spanish Cay. Diesel also seems limited as most marainas are saying they have none (OK, we got the last 55 gallons here before they ran out). I'm wondering if they got in to their reserves at a high price and they are waiting for the price per barrel to go up and justify an increase at the pump. We tanked up in Lucaya and I would expect that to be the best price you will find (3.50). Everything on this side of Abaco is at least .50 a gallon more expensive if they pump it.
 
Damn, Dan, nothing in that report sounds good. That whole place must really be hurting.

At this point I am convinced that is the case. They must have all bought into oil when it was high and now it's cheaper. As a result they don't wan to sell and thus they are losing business?
I hope I am wrong but it's damn dead down here unless you fly in. However according to the folks on Spanish that's normal at this time but even for normal business is SLOW.

Got a reply from Bakers Bay and they sent me a flyer on their places to eat. Harbor House for casual dining and Conch Shack for bar crap.

Marina is open. Might try it for a night or 2

WE are coming into Treasure on or about the 4-5th of January. Hang out there and then onto Atlantis and then the top end of the Eleuths. Have you been to the Eleuths?

Going back to Abacos end of Jan and then onto FtL end of Feb.

Hope to see you so I can give you some slow passes. What the heck do you have and what is the name?

I got little buck , 260 evergaldes center console and uncle buck, lazz with a swim platform.

John, we saw your boat last year in TC. We were with another couple that rented an OB to take their captain back to the airport. Coincidentally, they also have a Lazzara. I think their's is an 80 with the cockpit and platform also. Lazz makes a nice boat. Shallow draft also so it's good in Fl and the Bahamas. I believe they had some upgrades performed so it wouldn't cavitate getting on plane.
Anyway, we are in Freedom a 43 Hatteras MY.

Our itinerary is open and weather dependent but we are hoping to get farther South than the Abacos this year.
 
Dan, when did you get to the Bahamas last year? About 3 years ago Tammie and I took a trip (by plane) to Staniel Cay in the Exumas the week before Thanksgiving and it was dead then too, and that was pre-high fuel prices and pre-recession. We were there 5 days and never saw more than 1 or 2 boats at their marina the whole time. We were told at the time it was very early in the season for them and you don't normally see much boat traffic until later on.

Dan, are you in the abs now? when headed south? are you going to be near treasure in early jan?

this ok for the slow past? maybe see you Jan --do you know the eleutheras any?

John we are indeed in the abs now. Orchid Bay. Power is sporadic due to the main power plant fire I suppose. There are four other boats here. The weekend had some charters but otherwise the place is dead.
Further South? Not until after the holidays at least. We know nothing about the points south of here but are willing to give it a shot. There are a number of places we want to see but weather is going to play a strong hand. The folks in that 80' Lazzara I told you about were held up at Spanish Wells for 10 days due to weather!

Slow pass? LMAO. As long as the wake isn't bad I don't mind much.

No, no problem. Capt. Kool Aid is a nick name a Bahamian friend of mine who lives on Eleuthera gave me years ago. His name is Dr. Seabreeze. He's a local musician there.

Still need any local knowledge about Eleuthera Unkle Buck?

bimini was dead... 4 or 5 transients at Bimini bay, only one other boat at Honeymoon, and that was on a week end. same in Chub Cay, only a couple of transients and few sportfishes that seemed to be based tehre. diesel in Chub was 4.55 (I passed...) here in Nassau it's around 3.65.

Atlantis is busy... mostly large boats though 100+.

the Bahamas shoudl be nicknamed "the unfinished islands"... many resorts are halfway done or fallling apart and not being repaired. The first thing you see in Bimini (for years) are partially demolished buildins...

I'll take that Eleuthera information if you'd be so kind. I'd love to get to the Exumas, but with only a month each year for us, that's just too far away. But we might be able to make Eleuthera for something new.

You could trailer to Miami and go to the Exumas via Bimini and Nassau. Marsh Harbor is 170 nm from Stuart. Nassau is also 190 nm from Stuart. Nassau is 150 nm from Miami. The mileage numbers are likely actually longer since I just did striaght lines in MapSource. The point is the Exumas are not that far away for a month.

Those are good points. We might have to look into that. Too bad I got spoiled last year with where we found to load, unload and store the truck and trailer!

If you've got a month you have plenty of time to do the Exumas. It's 160nm to Nassau and then only 25-30 to the top of the Exumas.

As to Eleuthera, the best cruising would be on the North end. Were one of the nicest anchorages in the Bahamas lies, Royal Island. Very well protected and close to some very good fishing and diving spots. As well as being close to Spanishwells, Harbour Island and Current Cut.

But as much as I love Eleuthera, nothing in the Bahamas compares to the Exumas for the geography and the color and clarity of the water.
 
ditto on the exumas... not further than eleuthera and so many choices and anchorages. a month is plenty of time.
