Hello all. It has been some time since I have been on the forums, but I have been boating like mad.

I am considering a trip and I would like any advice/council/berating you all could offer.

First, about me:
I have been boating for 2 years, but have about 250 hours in those two years. All those hours are on my current boat. I consider myself a competent captain, and know how to use my lines to dock and can usually maneuver my boat wherever I need to put her. I am very safety aware and have all the needed safety stuff on board, as well as an EPIRB.

I have piloted this boat on several decent length trips. I took the boat from DE to Baltimore and then Annapolis and back. Then from DE to my Marina on the Hudson.

I also took a 9 day trip to Lake Champlain last year, stayed on the hook each night.

I have piloted her in thunderstorms and high winds (which was not a bit of fun)

I regularly take her out for trips and stay on the hook with great regularity.

Now about my boat:
Meridian 391 Gasser. Radar, GPS, Backup GPS, Radio, Backup Radio, 10 foot dinghy

The trip we have planned ( in theory), Starting Saturday July 5th.

Saturday Travel to Greenport 6:00
Sunday Greenport to Block Island 2:00
Monday Block Island to Hyanis 5:00
Tuesday Day Trip to Martha (via ferry)
Wednesday Day Trip to Nantucket (via Ferry)
Thursday Hyanis to Mystic 6:00
Friday Mystic
Saturday Mystic to LHYC 8:00

I am aware that this is all weather dependent. I am comfortable with my boat in up to 4 foot seas (and I mean real 4 footers, not what most boaters call 4 footers, which are usually about 2 footers)

I will have bailout plans for each leg.

I know it is a fairly aggressive schedule, but I am not a fan of getting somewhere and hanging out for a week.

So is there any advice, suggestions, or what not out there?

Thanks,
Anthony

In my opinion - too agressive. Too many stops and distance for a one week trip.

Day one is long and Greenport is not much of a destination.
Block Island deserves more than an afternoon unless you have been there many times before.
Going all the way to Hyannis and then backtracking to MV by ferry seems silly to me. I would pick either MV or Nantucket and skip Hyannis.

First of all it sounds like you’re going to have a great time, but knowing more about what you and your family like to do when you get somewhere would help a lot-

For example, as beautiful as Block is, we prefer Greenport- because we like more of a town, shops etc… others like the scenic beauty of block

If we want both we go to Martha’s – which is the best of both worlds- scenic beauty & more of a town(s)

Mystic is also great, there is tons of stuff for the whole family and you can use your dink to go up & down the river as your taxi

Also do they love the journey as much as you or just the destination? If not you may want to break up some of the longer runs.

IMHO

I agree that your plans are a little aggressive. We've been to Hyannis and IMO there is nothing there worth going for. Martha's is a better choice. Greenport and Block are great. Mystic is good, especially if you have kids. Block is our favorite.

I second the above. More time in Block. Skip Hyannis and stay on Vineyard, take ferry to Hyannis if you must visit. The crossing from Block all the way to Vineyard/Hyannis is a lot of open water in RI sound. It could easily be 4 footers on a nice day. If weather is not favorable, a stop in Newport could be a nice break although off your rumb line.

Just another opinion. If you haven't made reservations for most of these ports, you may not get a slip during July 4th period, which seems to stretch across two weeks this year. Call ahead, some require a two night stay to secure a reservation.

If you like some quiet time, stop in Cuttyhunk for the night & make the run from there to Mystic.
