Trojan 440 Upgrades, Fixes and Ideas

Allen - Mine had no grease at all left. If you look at the last picture you can see where there is nothing. Even a little corrosion. The oil reservoir has nothing in it either.

No. You can remove the lower unit by itself. Take the motor off first. Much easier.

Has anyone replaced their cutlass bearings? It is one of the things I plan to do in the spring when I haul out. I know the shafts are 2" but I don't know the dimensions of the struts. I should have measured when I hauled last weekend but didn't.

I also found a problem with my starboard rudder last weekend during the haul. There are four bolts that hold the rudder to the boat at the bottom. All were loose and one was broke off. Looks like I will be re-habing the rudders too. The list just keeps growing. I originally planned to be out for the month of April. Now looks like it might May too.

So the list of things I plan to get do starting around Feb (before I haul out) go like this:
duckbills in vacuflush
replace the rest of the screens
remove existing radar and install new
finish helm rehab
pull the genset out to refinish (I want to fix a spot of dry rot I found and then paint and insulate the space)
replace genset muffler
refinish floor in the garage

Once hauled I plan to:
pull props and shafts and have them balanced/tuned
replace transmission shaft seals
dripless shaft seals
cutlass bearings
rudder seals/bearings (and evidently at least on bolt)
Paint engine bilges
pull heat exchangers and have them cleaned
replace one alternator with high output alternator (I am tying one to the house batteries and the other to the starting batteries)
replace battery cables (and add a third house battery)
relocate genset battery to centerline with the rest
possibly install an inverter to power teles/sat dish
paint arch and install new radome and sat dish
strip bottom and put on new barrier coat and bottom paint

If after all that we have any boat bucks left I will likely put in new cockpit upholstery too.

So what does everyone else have planned for upgrades, etc. in the spring.

I made a video this morning from my first use of the gopro. While it is semi-cool I wish I had done it a little different. The first part is about 20sec of just in the slip. We went to the pump out for the last time of the season and I turned it on in the one shot every five seconds mode. There is also a 1/1 and 1/3 setting. For me the 1/5 setting is not enough. That part of the video, riding around waiting for out turn in the haul out bay and going back was a little over an hour. I shut it off while we cleaned the bottom and changed zincs. The battery ran out before we got back to the slip. I can not wait to use it in Jamaica in two weeks and all of next season on the boat.

Video not available on mobile device.

I had both my rudders pulled and rehabbed last year all new hardware and bushing which BTW they had custom made.

My upgrade is to spend more than the 90 nights we spent on the boat this year.

Your upgarade should be to move to a marina with water!

Mike when are you wrapping yor boat?

I don't know how to change to to make it available on a mobile device. If someone knows how please let me know.

Mike. I did spend 61 nights on board. However only 5 were away from my own marina. Something I hope to fix next year.

I'm putting up the frame this weekend, will put the cover on Wed before Thanksgiving

I don't log my nights on board but I'd guess about 12 not many but days on board countless I really didn't get to spend many nights on the boat this year but I was there between 2-4 days per week. I'm hoping to spend a lot more nights on board next year, hopefully my kids will let this happen.

Got you guys beat, for the time being we are living on the boat, very comfortable, last night is was 30 degrees outside no problem. Spent 3 months up in the islands last summer, perfect. I have a big house battery bank and a big inverter. A diesel heater is great. Got a big TV and a small one next to it with a "fireplace DVD " running, out in the cockpit, very cosy.
Would like to hear about a good muffler for the genny.
John, sounds you have a full time job ahead of you, good luck with it , been there done some of it.

Odvar

Looking to replace my genny muffler as well. I envy you Odvar I wish one day I can do the same. Would love living on the boat.

Allen it seems like you already do at least in the summer.

One winter project is just about dome. Took the swim platform off the boat a couple of weeks ago and brought it home, started working on the bottom first, I did one lare of epoxy and painted with interlux brightside white 4359 came our great.
Than flips the platform, sanded, sealed dents and chips on top and sides, painted the side rim with the same white from brightside. After one day of drying I applied the kiwi grip non skid, tried following instructions and vedios I watched on YouTube. I am very happy with the results:

I decided it was time to check in and see the status of my upholstery today and I was pleasantly surprised. It looks like they are more then half done and what is finished looks great. Everything was all covered in plastic or I would have taken a few pictures. This was a fairly big job but it seems they have under control. I can't wait to see it all put back together.
