Trojan 440 Upgrades, Fixes and Ideas

Was so busy lately with work, Was thinking about this thread. Happy its alive again. I have no plans this year other than some basic stuff and just get wet! Would love to see more pictures from oregonparts.

Hi Everyone, new 440 owner here. If money transferring hands is the official signal of legal ownership, it just became mine today! It's getting on a truck on Monday and should be at my local yard Tuesday. A couple weeks of having the yard do a few things and she comes home to my dock. I've read every post in this thread and there's a lot of great stuff in here that should help me solve some things without having to figure it all out myself. Looking forward to this summer and a lot of time spent on the boat. Our first yacht club cruise-out of the year was last weekend and it was awesome. It was also our last cruise-out on our Regal 30 footer. We took a big bite when we moved up, looking forward to all the extra room and amenities!

Congrats on the new boat! please fill us in on the details and post lots of pictures when you can, update us on the projects you have planed. They are great boats and you will enjoy!

But you seem to be missing an anchor:) This is a great forum and we all do what we can to help support it.

BTW Where in CA do you boat?

Congrats John. Where did you buy the boat? Can we get more details about it? year etc... how about some pictures? :-)

Congrats John. I see you are in the Bay area. I live up in the Folsom area. If you need any help figuring things out let me know.

Thanks for the welcome's guys. I'll get myself an anchor, I assume I get that when I financially support the site? I've never had a problem supporting sites that I frequent. I'm a weekday guy in San Jose (Silicon Valley) because I still have a job, and no I'm not really happy about that. [:-weepn] We have a house on the water in Discovery Bay on the Delta, so I plan to keep my boat behind my house on my dock. We'd like to move out there full time, but until we can change how many days we work from home, it's just not feasible yet. We boat primarily on the Delta since we are only weekenders, so our cruising out has to be fairly close...we do a lot of cruise-outs with the two yacht clubs we belong to, but hope to take some longer vacations and do some San Francisco Bay cruising soon, especially now that we have a larger boat.

We bought the boat down in Newport Beach in Southern Cal. It's a 1998, and it's quite clean. It was owned by a seemingly wealthy guy who has a house on the water in Newport, and he had a captain who ran the boat each month to keep it fresh and maintained any items that needed attention. So, for it's age, it's very very nice. That's not to say it's perfect, this is my first diesel boat and since I'm a natural born gear head, I'll be diving into the seawater system myself so I can get to know it and develop my own maintenance program. Aftercoolers are first, I'm going to send them to Seaboard the first time and I'll do them myself after that. While they are out I plan to go through the exchangers and gear oil coolers as well. It has one seawater pump that's dripping so I'll replace that. Other than that, just some odds and ends to start. Before we splash the boat though, I'm going to have the radar arch removed and blasted/powder coated. Every single saltwater boat that had a radar arch had corrosion (we were looking at Tiara's for a while as well and they all had it too). Also a bunch of cosmetic things to make the wife happy, such as interior carpet and exterior seagrass (the existing carpets are fine but, well, you know :) ) and I want to re-do the rear canvas since I don't like the piece that slopes from the arch to the back, I want squared-off camper canvas. I'm sure I'll find a bunch of other things to keep me busy as well, LOL. But, it's pretty darned clean so not too much major stuff (hopefully).

John, I was wondering where you moved to in Cali, Folsom is quite close to the Delta as you already know. We'll have to meet up soon, I've read all your posts and I'm sure you will be an invaluable reference for me, especially being so close. That's really cool. The drive from your place to my Big Green Egg smoker is not really all that far :)

The seller took a shot at selling this boat back in 2012. The video walk through of it is still on Youtube. Here are two video clips of the boat at that time. It hasn't changed.

This is great. I also remember looking at these videos when I was shoping for mine and also after i got mine.
Dave should take pictures of his camper and post, I think his camper set up, the way it is attached to the arch from the top and the sides is the best way to do it.

John, we should get together some time in the near future. I have been so busy since moving here that I don't really frequent this board as much as I used to. Especially with my boat shrink-wrapped and winterized in MD. And unless someone steps up and buys it, it will stay there until at least this time next year. And that looks like the most likely scenerio. Do you have room for two at your doc? lol. If I can get OregonParts to move it and find a place to keep it that would be half the battle.

Anyway, my email is jmeirhofer at yahoo.com Of course you have to substitute the at with the symbol for it. I have been through every inch of my boat. Including spending a couple days in various positions in the anchor locker restoring it.

So Dave, any chance of getting you to post up pics of your camper canvas before I spend thousands on canvas?

John, you should move that boat out here. We looked at every one on this coast for sale and all the others were junk. Plus you've been through your whole boat. The boat we bought is super clean but that doesn't really calm the anxiety that comes with worrying about what hidden gremlins might be lurking.

John my boat is still wrapped and I don't think I have any pictures of my new top, this said it sounds like you want a camper top "I want squared-off camper canvas" Mine sloops back from the arch. I like to open up the back when onboard I also find it easier to step onto the gunwale without the camper top in the way.

I'm hoping to start working on the boat soon maybe even today. I will be starting with reinstalling my coolant tanks and replacing all the hoses. I have all the hoses I haven't even open the box they came in last fall, I hope they're all there.

I will post a few pictures when I get the top back on.

Can anyone tell me what anchor comes on the 440 Express? And has anyone fit up any other brands that worked well with the integrated bow roller?

Thanks,
John

P.S. speaking of anchors, I paid for my "forum anchor", 2 years' worth, but I'm not sure when it shows up...

Les will get around to activating it I thing he does them in bunches as they come in.
As for the boat anchor I'm not sure that any two of us have the same anchor. I have a Bruce anchor I very happy with it but it all depends in the area that you boat and what the sea bottom is. I do believe that we all have chain only I wish I have more chain length but it has never been an issue so far.

I have a bruce as well with 170 feet of chain. It is a 40# but I have been told it should be bigger.

Thanks guys. I was thinking of getting a Manson or a Rocna but wasn't sure if the rollbar would fit.

Boat went on the trailer today, however the permit didn't come out of Caltrans today (sounds like an excuse to me). In any event, my boat will roll into Stockton on Wednesday instead of tomorrow. Getting very excited! I hope they can get the things we want done finished up quickly so I can bring it home!

What projects do you have planned at least in the short term? I assume detail and bottom paint but is there anything else that needs to be done?

My biggest project will be moving it next year. LOL. Can you tell I have Springboatitis? I won't know what to do this year not doing projects every weekend. :)

John. Let me know if you need some help getting your arch off and finding a powder coater. I have a couple friends with powder coating businesses. Also, if you do not have an anchor or chain in there now it would be a good time to refinish the anchor locker.

The new "Vulcan" (I believe) model of anchor from Rocna, is designed for power boats.... no rollbar. It's definitely my next anchor.

Well, we have quite a few things we are going to try to complete in the space of about 5 weeks now that I think about it. Bottom paint was just done less than a year ago and the props look like new so not going to do that for another year or two. And this boat appears to have always been kept polished, it pretty much shines like new so I don't think I'll need to detail it. However, we have immediate "before we splash it" things such as:
Radar arch removal, blasting, powder coating
Take a look-see at the rudder bolts (saw the comments about that on this thread)
Engine alignment (this will be done in the water...the dripless seals are dripping, survey says probably alignment, and it's taking a 400 mile road trip after all)
Fix fuel leak at #4 and #5 injectors on port engine

Things we will have done once we get it home include (or while it's at the yard if the arch is going to take a long time):
New canvas and screens (Bimini is like new but the rest of it is pretty toast)
New seat bottoms (you can't tell by looking at the upholstery but someone's butt is going to go right through one someday)

Then the long term things that I plan to do myself:
New interior carpet
New cockpit seagrass (saw this stuff on new boats at the San Diego Boat Show, love it)
Service entire raw water system
Replace port raw water pump
Clean up the generator pan (not as bad as most, but still a little rust)
Eventually (or sooner, depending on condition) deal with the infamous anchor locker

I'm sure I'll find a million little things beyond that.

John, have you removed your radar arch? I'm not sure how big a job it is, since the antennas are already off for transport, maybe I should do it myself? I'm in contract manufacturing and our powdercoater for our proto shop is basically across the street. Getting it blasted and powder coated is no problem, I'm more worried about removing it myself, not sure how involved it is.

Oh, and probably the biggest rush project will be dealing with my dock if the boat won't fit in the slip. I have a 15' slip and it's a 15' boat...really just depends on what exactly it is at a foot above the waterline, and whether I'm on the plus or minus side of 15 feet on my slip width. Tape measuring will commence tomorrow, LOL. I have room on the left side of my dock, but there are three jetski lifts on that side that would have to come off to make room. I have so many toys on my dock that there is going to have to be some musical chairs activity. We have our ski boat on a side mount lift, 5 jetskis, and a Duffy. And it's not even that large of a dock!

I replaced both raw water pumps on my 450c's when I got the boat. I put in the Seaboard pumps. I also removed and serviced my aftercoolers. I'm replacing all the cooling hoses this spring.

I removed the carpeting below and replaced it with vinyl flooring. Found two additional storage hatches under the carpet.
