Our last child graduates college in May (with a degree in marine science - how cool is that!), and my wife and I promised ourselves that all of that money that used to go for tuition is going to be put to use on a larger boat. We are looking at express boats in the 36' to 41' range, and budget has us looking at older boats. I know that upkeep can be pretty expensive or time consuming or both, but I am comfortable with that. What I would really like to do is find a boat with "good bones" and fix her up the way i would like to. One boat that I have heard a lot about is the Trojan International series, before the company was sold to Carver. We like to travel with friends a lot, and I am wondering what the noise level is going to be in the cockpit. Is normal conversation possible, or will we screaming to make ourselves heard? Many of the ones I see online have Detroit diesels, Which I know are loud. I have also seen some Formulas for sale in the general size/age/price that we are looking for. How about the noise level of those? Any other suggestions?

I hear only good about the Trojan International’s & there is a RO or two that I’m sure will jump in.

As a past owner of a Cummins powered Formula 41PC I can tell it was the best running boat I had over the 4+ decades of boating. It ran better than my 50'Cruisers. Formula’s are small for their size compared to other Expresses in the size rage, But the boat will take you from Hell & back compared to the others. As I'm thinking of getting back into boating the 41PC is high on my list.

That being said the 16’ beam on the 13 meter Trojan International’s is incredible and I understand they have the ride to match!

RWS is our expert on the International Trojans. He'll most likely chime in soon.

RWS - I know that you repowered with diesels. How easy is it to have a conversation while cruising? How about with other engines?

Thanks

I've got a buddy with a Regal 40 with a pair of Cat 3116's. Normal conversation while cruising...no. Loud, yes, but not screaming

My 410 Sundancer has Cat 3126's. As with any boat at cruising speed, you hear them, but I find them to be quieter than the 5.7 Mercruisers in my old 300 Sundancer. The engine hatch seems much better insulated for sound. More than likely it was designed that way because of the diesels.

I looked at a couple of Trojan 370/390/400 expresses, which were a carryover from the Trojan 10.8 Meter Express. Great looking boats and with diesels would run great too. I would up with a Formula 37PC, but seriously considered the Trojans.

There are a bunch of us here with 440 Trojan/Carver Express.

Look under the Carver owners forum below

=======================================

I repowered with Yanmar LP series 315 hp 6 cylinder turbodiesels.

quieter than the Crusaders

far more reliable than the Crusaders

far safer than the Crusaders

additionally, we burn half the fuel and our most efficient cruising speed went from 13-15 kts to 19-21 kts

the decreased fuel burn increased our range

Trojan put a lot of sound insulation in these boats from the factory, even in places like under the gunnels.

We added an additional layer of SOUNDDOWN insulation directly over the factory insulation, but only in the floor of the cockpit.

The boat is totally awesome with these engines - 12 years later, wow is all I can say.
