Hello we need to replace the Ultraleather upholstery in the dinette and salon of our 1999 Carver Mariner 350. It is cracking and peeling. It is not in the sun and we only use a damp cloth to wipe it off but it hasn't worn well. There are numbers written on the tag attached to the bottom of each cushion which it appears you could use to reorder. I emailed Carver but no response. Has anyone replaced the cushion covers through Carver or just had them reupholstered?

Thanks for your help any suggestions are appreciated

I don't have the couches, the boat nor the problem, but if I did, I would simply contact the local upholstery guy. Salon furniture isn't really "marine", but rather fairly typical custom furniture. If that plan bugs you, contact your local sailmaker/canvas guy ( who will likely sub it out to the local upholstery guy... )

What Radioactive said. That's the best way to go.

yup, what Bill said. Mine are perfect after 11 years so I dont know why your died.

PS to remove the seat backs look in the folds for screws :)

Tumbling Dice - we are in the SAME boat - same year, same problem, gonna contact the local upholstery folks.

(sighs...) Man, I wish I had a boat modern and nice enough to have cracking and peeling ultaleather...

Good luck with the repair!!!

Not sure of your set up but here's another option you could consider...

Brad & Hall has some nice sofa's and recliners that fold out for sleeping (in UltraLeather) that we went with for the salon area. What I liked about it was you could custom order the length/design/color of the flexsteel sofa and they shipped it to me. It could be taken apart outside of the salon, moved in thru the small door opening, and then reassembled. It has been holding up very well for us.

The dinette - we hired out an upholster shop (took the cushions in).

If you want to see an example, scroll through page 2 of the Carver Boat Pics forum and there is a pic of these in one of the interior shots (blue).

Thanks for everyone's input. Are there any other 1999 Carver Mariner 350's out there that are having UltraLeather upholstery cracking and peeling problems? After seeing Captain Buddha's repsonse maybe others are having the same issue. I finally did hear back from Carver and they do sell replacement covers. I don't have a price and will need to compare the cost against having the cushions done by a local upholsterer. If this is a common problem with the 1999 Carver maybe we can get some type of discount from the manufacturer. We won't know unless we ask.

If it is a common problem, I, personally, might seriously consider the upholsterer, rather than repeating the exercise w/ Carver. Not being critical, however, just differing in the manner of resolving the issue.

And I must also admit that I wish I had the situation to have the problem. < sigh > ;)

Tumbling Dice - when you hear back the price from Carver please post it up. I'm gonna wait until it gets a little worse, just have a few little spots here and there, but by the looks of it, this will be the last season for it...most likely will use a local upholstery shop and higher-grade material.

Buddha has the right idea. Get higher-grade material! Especially the foam inside. Have the upholsterer us "closed cell foam". It will last for many more years without crumbling as is usual for the type of foam Carver's supplier would use.

We did hear back from Carver, the seat cushion covers would average around $275/300.00 each. With 11 cushions to cover it adds up. There is an advantage of having each cushion cover already cut to fit or with zippers in place if applicable. We are going to go ahead and get a bid or two from a couple of local upholsterers. I have no idea what thye will charge to replace the cushions, fabric, etc There are certainly other things I would rather be spending money on rather than this but it is starting to look pretty bad.
