I have a 1990 Merc 7.4
Last week the starter went to the point it blew a puff of smoke out surrendering.
I replaced the starter as of today let the batteries sit on the charger all night this morning I tried to start it. The starter turns over no problems. Problem is that there is no spark getting to the motor. I check the wiring on the starter to make sure all was tight.
Next I hotwired the Coil directly off a battery to see if the spark was too weak coming thru. Still no luck.
My thought is that the starter solenoid slave on the topside of the engine is bad and not allowing the relay to the distributor cap to let it fire off can anyone help me confirm this or did I miss something replacing the starter. Any and all help is appreciated and welcomed as of right now my 4th is shot
