I noticed a USCG Falcon Jet circling over the bay between Point lookout/Lido Beach and Freeport/Bellmore at about 500' around 1730.

Anyone have their radio on and hear what was happening?

Very unusual to have this type of asset in this area.
 
I also seen it fly over Copiague/Tanner Park area............looked cool though !!!
 
I saw the Falcon circling too.

2 fishermen in canoe missing off South Shore

Coast Guard and a host of police and fie agencies are searching for two men missing off the South Shore since Wednesday.

The two men, both of Queens, set out on a canoe fishing trip this past Sunday, but when family members hadn't heard from them by Wednesday, the men were reported missing.

Initially, family members thought the men were at Montauk, and a search focused there, the Coast Guard said.

However, when New York State Police found a van matching the description of the vehicle the men were driving parked near Wantagh Bridge 3, the search focused on that area. The canoe was not found with the van.

There are no details available on the canoe or the fishermen. A Coast Guard representative said the family asked that the names be withheld.

The Coast Guard currently has a 25-foot search and rescue boat looking for the individuals in the South Oyster Bay area.

In addition, the Coast Guard said, the New York State Police, State Park Police, Nassau County Marine, Hempstead Fire Department, State Environmental Conservation Police and first responders from Hempstead are working together with the Coast Guard to locate the two men.

The Nassau County Police Department has deployed a helicopter and the Coast Guard is using a Falcon, a search and rescue jet, to help in the search efforts.

I haven't read a newspaper in awhile as I'm on vacation.

Yesterday there was a overturned kayak found in the amity cut which prompted a massive search effort all afternoon.

It's good to know that if you ever need serious help out there, you'll get a serious response.
 
I was anchored in the flats across from Tanner Park yesterday afternoon with a few boats, putzing around in a small sailboat & some kayaks. The CG helicopter buzzed us 4 times over a two hour period. Later a ToB Bay Constable rafted up for a few minutes & explained they were looking for the missing kayaker. Earlier he had dropped of a dozen or so Babylon firemen on the islands around the Amity Cut to search.

I saw the Flacon too, flying unusually low, along with USCG helicopters. Article explains it. Fog/ haze took over last night, so less search and rescue support. Sad reason to see all these assets.

When the Falcon is flying a search pattern, they fly a circle, then go straight for a short period, then make a circle in the same direction as the last, then repeat.
That is probably why they were circling.
 
It's a shame. Probably a couple of guys on a low budget trying to get in some good fishing in salt water.
 
It is amazing how stories get twisted. Yesterday I was told they were looking for a woman who jumped off the RM Bridge. I thought it was odd to be looking so far west, but thought it may just be how they judge tides etc. I did a Google search and found that a 26 YO man jumped on June 4th. How this guy came out with no injuries is amazing. I was told that 60-65’ is around the outer envelope of survival. I guess it’s just how you fall; a belly flop in a pool can hurt.

Long Island police rescued a man who jumped off Robert Moses Causeway Bridge into the chilly waters of Great South Bay yesterday.
The 26-year-old man was pulled from the 59-degree water near West Islip by the Suffolk County police marine bureau and the Coast Guard, cops said.
The man, who fell at least 60 feet and was in the water for 15 minutes, suffered no injuries.
 
Some crazy people have talent. I guess this guy had good diving, swimming and cold water survival skills.
