I have a 2000 340 SeaRay and blew a trannie with 340 hours on it. Just a loud "bang" and it locked up. Has anyone else had this problem?

I feel your pain. My 2001 310 DA just lost a transmission due to a failed oil cooler that ingested seawater. $250 part, 2-3K repair. Check the oil cooler.

if you have velvet vee drives, it's a known problem. Many of these 98 thru 2000/2001 failed usually with fairly low hours. on my prev. boat, one failed at 100 hours, the other one aroudn 170. first one full warranty, the second one out of warranty but merc provided a new tranny, i paid the labor (about $1500 or so)

The first one jsut started running hot at fast cruise (3600) at low cuise 3200 it was fine... second one first failed with a bang, it was the pressure relief valve in the oil pump. replaced that ($800) but the drive started overheating soon after.

Merc also provided larger coolers...

if you have enough room around the engines and tranny you dont' need to pull the engine, they can just discon the shaft and replace the tranny.

no other symptoms before failure, fluid was fine. the problem is the oil pump and press relief valve.

mos shoudl have failed by now, unless they are low hours and the boats where mostly run at low speed.

good luck.

Pascal,
Do you know if they solved this problems in newer engines (2004 +)?

afaik, they solved it after a couple of years... 2001 or 2002.

I have a 94 300 Sundancer. I have no idea how old my oil coolers are. How long are they expected to last. Should they be changed as preventative maintainence?

Thanks

Shifting gears (pun intended), I had three of the four bolts holding my shaft coupling to my tranny coupling loosen and break last week with nothing but a little vibration as a warning before.
Has any one ever experienced this problem without striking or wrapping anything around the shaft or prop?
04' Sundancer with 8.1 horizions and ZF Harth transmissions.

Steve, I haven't experienced it (I have a 2005 340), but a 330 owner behind me in winter storage had the same experience as you -- he said he has heard about several other similar incidents. I've added "checking shaft coupling bolts" to my monthly checklist and long trip checklist.
